I’ve just come home from caring for a baby who died from SUDI.
Yes thank you, I say, needing to protect.
I don’t think they are, mummy.
No, you’re right. I’m sorry. Sometimes babies die too.
Truth is better. For kids too.

Constipation & unexplained episodic cramping abdominal pain in children (which is highly likely to be secondary to constipation) is the commonest reason for referral to our general paediatric clinic.
It is easily treatable, and there are some excellent resources to help. 1/

- creating a safe space
- Time to speak

Today I was able to help a patient. I translated for him.
He was able to express his needs safely in his language. I was able to help. It felt rare.

Good things to say to patients at triage:
• I can see you're worried
• Fortunately, I haven't found anything serious
Don't dismiss. Reassure.
