Congratulations to @Oscarreyesgaido, winner of this year’s AHA Katz Basic Science Research award and to our indefatigable mentor Dr. Mark Anderson. Looking forward to more Katz and Marcus AHA winners from this pedigree! @priyaumapathi @KlitosKon @betsy_luczak

There’s worry about what the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action could mean for the pipeline of who eventually provides health care in the U.S. For more on these concerns, @IAmAmnaNawaz spoke to @UREssien. to.pbs.org/3MzB3rB

1/ 🧵 NEW Paper. In @JAMACardio we asked: are there racial/ethnic disparities in treatment & outcomes in the Get With the Guidelines - AFIB Registry. Short answer: YES. Here’s what we found, what it means, and what we can do to achieve #Pharmacoequity. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

Based on the data in this paper, there is not enough evidence for routine screening, especially with the Kardia device at a clinic visit to a primary care visit. #CardsJC

In addition to cost issues with continuous monitoring of ECG, there is the administrative and clinical burden of the data overload. #CardsJC

The average BMI in this study was ~ 28. This is certainly much lower than I see in my practice and may have also affected the outcomes. Obesity is a known risk factor for AF. I may send my patients to MA for weight loss therapy! #CardsJC

Although AA have lower incidence of AF, they have worse outcomes. The AF Paradox. #CardsJC

There was data on race/ethnicity - ~ 83% white. Not unexpected in the study area in MA. #CardsJC

AppleWatch does well too for detecting AF and I recommend this also in my patients with symptoms

Kardia is pretty good at detecting irregular rhythms. I do not use it in my office but often recommend it to patients with symptoms that are concerning for arrhythmias. It has the added benefit that patients can transmit the rhythm strips to the physician for review. #CardsJC

I think it is important to ask who is doing the screening - interntist/primary care providers as in this article vs cardiologist vs EP. By the time most EPs are seeing these patients there is either a high index of suspicion or a presumptive diagnosis. #CardsJC

The antiarrhythmics used were weighted more towards flecainide and class other class I agent. Would the results have been different if weighted more towards class III agents like Sotalol and Dofetilide. Agreed often times there are factors that limit their use #CardsJC
