I presented to my British counterpart, @YvetteCooperMP, the situation regarding the serious violation of NATO airspace by a Russian drone that entered Romanian territory today. I received assurances of support from the 🇬🇧United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and during our discussion we reaffirmed the spirit of solidarity among allied states. I also expressed gratitude for the United Kingdom’s role in the air policing missions in Romania, where it is currently deployed with aircraft, crews, and support teams. This is already the United Kingdom’s sixth air policing mission in Romania. We also agreed to strengthen our common deterrence and defence capabilities within NATO and decided to coordinate ahead of the special North Atlantic Council meeting on enhanced security in June, as well as the NATO Summit in Ankara in July.

I spoke with President @ZelenskyyUa following the Russian drone incident last night in Galați, the most serious on Romanian soil since the beginning of Russia's large-scale aggression against Ukraine. As our allies and partners across Europe and the world have made clear today, Russia's aggression does not stop at borders. By continuing to attack Ukraine and threatening neighbouring NATO members, Russia demonstrates total disregard for international law and innocent civilian lives. This must stop. Russia must end its attacks and engage in meaningful dialogue toward a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. President Zelenskyy and I agreed to accelerate Romania-Ukraine cooperation on the co-production of drones that can be rapidly deployed. Ukraine's battlefield expertise and drone technology are strategic assets for the defence of the entire Eastern Flank. Romania will continue to invest in strengthening NATO's Eastern Flank and in supporting Ukraine in its legitimate quest of self-defence.

Today I summoned the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Bucharest to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a reaction to the grave incindent last night when a Russian military drone crashed in the municipality of Galați resulting in the injury of civilians and material damage. We strongly condemned this act of violation of Romania’s airspace and underlined the exceptional seriousness of the incident, which directly endangered the lives and safety of Romanian citizens. Romania has repeatedly warned the Russian side about its irresponsible engagement in a spiral of escalation in the context of the illegal war of aggression it wages against Ukraine. We firmly emphasized that there can be no doubt whatsoever regarding the exclusive responsibility of the Russian Federation for this new incident. We also called on the Russian side to put an end to the attacks against Ukraine, which have direct and serious consequences for regional security and constitute grave and flagrant violations of international law. During the meeting, the Russian side was notified of the decision of the Romanian authorities to declare the Consul General of the Russian Federation in Constanța persona non grata. He is requested to leave the country within 72 hours. We also notified the Russian Ambassador of our decision to close the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Constanța. Romania will continue to coordinate its response with its partners and allies, at NATO and EU level, as well as in the multilateral framework, and remains committed to adopting all necessary measures for the defense of national security.

Last night a Russian drone entered Romanian airspace and hit a residential building, injuring civilians. Time and again, Russia has shown it has no regard for civilian life, international law, or sovereignty of its neighbours. We stand with Ukraine, Romania and all NATO allies.

Russia’s violation of NATO airspace, hitting a residential building in Romania is extremely dangerous and reckless. The UK strongly condemns this grave escalation that puts lives at risk. I am in contact with the Romanian Foreign Minister. The UK stands united with Romania and all Allies to defend every inch of NATO territory.

A russian drone carrying explosives, involved in the bombing of infrastructure in Ukraine crashed in Galați, Romania, causing a fire on the roof of a residential apartment building. Two persons sustained minor injuries and several residents required medical attention, the building was evacuated. Two aircraft and a helicopter belonging to the Romanian Air Force were scrambled when Russian drones appeared on the radar, they had permission to shoot. This incident represents a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation. Romania will take the necessary diplomatic response measures regarding this serious violation of international law and of its airspace. Romania has informed European member states, the Allies and the NATO Secretary General of the circumstances and has requested measures to accelerate the transfer of anti-drone capabilities to Romania. The Russian Federation bears direct responsibility for these grave and irresponsible actions. Romania will act with the utmost determination to increase international pressure on the Russian Federation with a view to achieving an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. Foto: IGSU
