Richmond Park saw a record 149 bird species in 2024, helped by the draining of Pen Ponds which attracted waders, including this juvenile little Ringed Plover (📷Nigel Jackman). More about the birds spotted in Richmond Park 2015-2024 here: frp.org.uk/wp-content/upload…

#FungiFriday in Richmond Park. The U.K. has some of the most important grasslands in the world for Waxcaps, a group of vibrantly coloured grassland fungi, and Richmond Park, home to extensive acid grasslands, is a key London habitat? Spot these jewels in the Park now!

A vibrant scarlet mushroom for #MushroomMonday, the Fly Agaric is the classic fairytale mushroom, and is often associated with Silver Birch trees. You can spot them in Richmond Park in the Isabella Plantation and along the walk in Sidmouth wood, now.

For #mothmonday we have one of the characteristic day flying moths of a Richmond Park summer, the Cinnabar moth. You’re as likely to see the dramatically wasp striped caterpillars on Ragwort as the startlingly metallic scarlet and black adult- both are advertising their poison!

A successful guided walk today for the Richmond Park Flora Group, re-finding Lemon-scented Fern (O. limbosperma) in a small ditch. People walking past probably thought the 6 of us were off the rails as we took it in turns to kneel down and sniff a plant in a ditch. 10/10 scent!

A reminder of the group's next guided walk tomorrow (15th May) meeting at 10:30am by the Pembroke Lodge cafe. We'll be focusing on identifying plants in the park's nationally important lowland acid grassland habitat, with the added chance of Adder's-tongue fern. All are welcome!

For #thicktrunktuesday one of the true veterans of Richmond Park’s oaks has entered the full pomp of its summer foliage. Older than the Park itself, it was probably pollarded ( pruned to promote a dense set of branches) in its youth, giving it a decidedly thickset appearance.

The acid grassland of Richmond Park is a tricky habitat to find flowering plants in the middle of winter. Challenge accepted though!
The #NewYearPlantHunt is now underway: all best wishes to our thousands of amazing Plant Hunters! Remember, the NY Plant Hunt Support Team is on hand to help you - we'll be working shifts right through to 2nd January. Email us at nyplanthunt@bsbi.org if you have any questions.
