Some seasonal decorations from our group and those from @RoxburyLab @IAndreuNano ! Their decorating skills far surpass mine (but yes, that’s me on the bat!)

Thanks to @RILifeSciHub for supporting some of our work creating biomimetic hydrogels and investigating how nanotherapeutics transport in cell-laden networks!
ICYMI ā€¼ļø The Hub recently awarded grants to 14 organizations to fuel research and workforce development in RI's life sciences sector. Stay tuned to learn more about how these grantees are driving innovation and growth in our state! šŸ”šŸ”¬šŸ§¬

Just in time for fall, some of our slimy, drippy, some might even say spooky gels featured on the cover of @softmatter! Highlight our work by @Elnaz_NM, identifying yielding and fracturing motifs in colloidal gels: pubs.rsc.org/en/content/arti…

šŸ“°New paper out today with @N0tAChemb0t! We synthesized some incredibly effective rheological modifiers that gel emulsions and achieve moduli of ~1kPa at <1wt%. These mechanics arise from bottlebrush midblocks that promote bridging and reduce looping. pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs…

We show that the rate elastic growth in these systems is related to the relative bridging fraction. Although we still can't directly quantify bridging density, this approach is one of the first experimental techniques to gain insight into bridging density in complex fluids.

Some excellent synthetic work by our team of (not-on-twitter) graduate students and the first of hopefully many papers coming out of our Rhode Island polymers team!

Proud of my alma mater @cooperunion for returning to full tuition scholarships! šŸŽ‰ Because of these scholarships, students can excel inside and outside of the classroom unlike anywhere else in higher education
The first day of the semester at the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York on Tuesday came with a surprise for its college seniors. Their tuition for the year will be free. nyti.ms/3AYE9Ea

Peanut Butter is a liquid. We said what we said.
Community note
Peanut butter is technically a Bingham Plastic (a subset of non-Newtonian fluids), but under ASTM D4359-90 it is classified as a liquid, not a solid. The TSA considers the nut spread a liquid, but is unrestricted if it is a sandwich ingredient. chem.libretexts.org/Bookshelves/Or… kelid1.ir/FilesUp/ASTM_S… twitter.com/AskTSA/status/…

Fantastic! URI is innovating across biomedical and engineering fields, especially in workforce development and providing direct support (i.e., paid!) for disadvantaged students to gain the necessary skills to enter these positions. Glad to see state support come through!
NEW: In front of a room of hundreds of biotech, education, and business leaders, Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi confirmed that funding for the University of Rhode Island’s proposed life sciences building ā€will be in the budgetā€ this year. @BostonGlobe bostonglobe.com/2024/05/21/m…

It’s impossible to address these inequities without accurate data. Disappointed to see this obstruction but glad that the community is holding agencies accountable. Thank you @freemanjb for your work on this.

The agency who generates official diversity statistics for the US scientific workforce was forced to give up its pilot data, which show it's been misrepresenting its data to avoid adding LGBTQ questions. @NCSESgov is obstructing LGBTQ equity in science. science.org/doi/10.1126/scie…

Our lab has a new toy to begin testing the performance of our complex fluids as 3D printing inks. Thanks to @Dr_COB for help designing this set up, which was built completely by a team of undergrads sponsored by @URIEngineering!

.@RIPTA_RI bus service to our universities is essential to growing our workforce, meeting student needs, and increasing access to education for communities across the state. We should be expanding service to the university not cutting!
In other RIPTA news, the agency is adding another community meeting about revised proposed service changes. This one will be at the University of Rhode Island Memorial Student Union in Kingston on April 19 from noon to 2 pm.
