On this Memorial Day, please remember the 34 Americans who lost their lives during Israel's attack on the USS Liberty on June 8, 1967. While patrolling in international waters in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, the USS Liberty was savagely attacked without warning or justification by air and naval forces of the state of Israel. During the air attack, USS Liberty’s crew had difficulty contacting the Sixth Fleet to request assistance due to intense communications jamming by Israel. Additionally, the Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara, directly ordered the recall of two rescue aircrafts that had been launched from Sixth Fleet aircraft carriers. Israel’s attack on the USS Liberty lasted over two hours. In fact, three life rafts were deployed from the Liberty, but Israeli torpedo boats focused their fire on the rafts, destroying two of them and sweeping the decks to kill as many men as possible. Never forget the 34 Americans who lost their lives that day, as well as the 171 men who were injured. #MemorialDay
