I've been thinking a lot about long haul game development lately. It takes incredible mental and spiritual fortitude to work on one thing for years at a time, with no pay, and the distinct possibility that the only reward will be that you can say you saw it through to the end.
You'll find long haul devs working in total defiance of the odds, and public opinion (often the subject of ridicule), laser focused on a vision of a reality that doesn't exist to anyone else yet. It's pure passion. They believe their game is good and beautiful, and something deep within their soul knows that they need to bring it into the world. And to do that - they are willing to walk a very exceptional, very lonely road.
Stardew Valley is one of the most common examples of a game that took a long time to make - which is funny, because 4 years is not that long (especially for one guy doing literally everything). This quote is from an AMA
@ConcernedApe did a few years ago.
It's a good lesson on keeping your determination. Believe that it will work out, and even if it doesn't, you will learn and keep going.
