Not really the done thing to tweet any more is it, but where else does one put one’s thoughts?! Reflecting this morning on the increase in regulatory staff per provider set out in the Darzi report and the fact that we have much more real (or near) time data flow than pre2020

The two are pretty linked ime. We are creating work “churn” by responding to an ever shorter data cycle and trying to influence it. Leads to more reactive work and less proactive. Leads to less local ownership.

Tell you what’s a far bigger part of my life now than I’d ever imagined? BINS. I have four (4). I have a calendar appt to remember to take the right ones out at the right time. I think about “if it’s a good time to go to the tip” *constantly*.

What a lovely week! Hating feeling like I don’t know anyone or “how to get stuff done”, but that’s been more than offset by the sheer welcoming nature of everyone I’ve met (ahem - the North) and the potential of the work to do. I’ve even decided to come back next week too.
Relocation ✅ Off to be the new girl @MFTnhs this morning.

First time I’d heard this quote in @JamesTitcombe HSJ briefing today. Couldn’t agree more. In my world of performance, I try to not follow the typical course of “scary meeting with the DoP & now I must do x/y/z”. I sometimes wonder if it makes me seem weak, but it tends to work!

The @AccessProjectUK is looking for more volunteers to help tutor their growing numbers of students age 14-16 as they head towards tertiary education for an hour a week online. Can you help? bit.ly/4eJTvvZ

GCSE exams are over and we hope this year's cohort are proud of their hard work! Why not do something amazing and help a student from a disadvantaged background to reach their potential next year? Join @AccessProjectUK as a volunteer tutor: bit.ly/3VKLmP4

Hope for the future a common topic today. It was lovely to do my weekly @AccessProjectUK tutorial earlier this week and for my tutee to tell me they got a 9 in their mocks and one of the best scores in their year ✨⭐️. She will go far!

Can’t think of a better group of minds to spend Election Eve w/ than those which make up @TheKingsFund General Advisory Council. Left with 3 key reflections: 1) when it comes to “what must be done around health & care post election” we know most of the “what” & less of the “how”

2) managing and leading through radical / genuinely major change is probably a skill we need to invest more in PDQ across NHS management ranks and 3) there was def a mix up of names for me to be a member - perhaps the…other Burnham?! 🤔

See also: shaming politicians for being on holiday.
People: We need better politicians! Why don’t we have better politicians!? Also people: He wants to WHAT? A few hours a week? With his family? The useless layabout.

Really interesting comments from @wesstreeting on managers. I think the answer to his query is that the system is excessively managed, with far to many targets/demands from NHSE/DHSC/ministers, but that there is insufficient management/analytical capacity in hospitals and ICBs

Not a quiet last few weeks in South East London. But a reminder of the talent, grit and deep partnership working we have in the sector and that I’ve been lucky to be part of in my years here. This Director of Performance is signing out @GSTTnhs @KingsCollegeNHS ❤️

PS I can tell it’s time to go home to the North because I made people take chunks of the cake home and to the pub with them to ensure we got our moneys worth…

I’ve said it before but - having worked in civil service, consultancy, venture capital & NHS management (!) - imo there’s no difference in skill & talent between the workforce. There is, however, a difference in the scale of the problems to fix, and the support available to do so

Let’s start with proper investment in professional training, standards and approach, shall we. (I.e. how about no you don’t learn how to do this incredibly important function by picking it up on the job and a laminated SOP from 2004)
