The bill, which passed by 171 votes to 157, was signed into law by President François Hollande days later, coming into force on 18 May 2013. The first same-sex wedding in France took place just days after that in Montpellier.
The bill sparked some of the largest street protests France had seen in years, with hundreds of thousands of opponents, many mobilised by a campaign called La Manif Pour Tous.
