@IOHK_Charles made a great video about the @MidnightNtwrk mainnet launch, and I took the liberty of translating his legendary whiteboard thinking (Who knows, knows) into something more digestible for everyone. I recreated his ideas in an Excalidraw diagram and compiled some key takeaways from my notes (Obsidian) to help break down what’s actually happening during launch week. So, let's go: Midnight Week is not a single launch. The network is being activated in stages, prioritizing stability. The approach follows a “guarded staging” model. Testnet was used to intentionally break the system, train participants, and validate infrastructure before moving forward. The network is entering a federated phase before full decentralization. A selected group of Federated Node Operators (FNOs) will initially run the network to ensure reliability, coordinate upgrades, and stabilize operations. These operators are responsible for core network functions. They produce blocks, process transactions, and manage early-stage coordination, including handling hard forks when needed. Many people aren’t paying attention yet, but I believe $BTC ↔ $ADA atomic swaps could play a major role in the Cardano ecosystem! They represent the cleanest and most trust-minimized on-ramp for bringing Bitcoin liquidity into Cardano. This type of atomic swap doesn’t require liquidity pools, wrapped assets, or trusted bridge operators. Even if a trade fails, funds are safely returned to their original owners. In simple terms, this is one of the most conservative and robust ways to implement cross-chain swaps. This is possible because Bitcoin and Cardano share the UTXO model, allowing HTLC-based, trust-minimized atomic swaps. Bitcoin’s total market capitalization is around $1.76T. Even if just 1% of that value were to move into Cardano, that would be roughly $17.6B. Compared to Cardano’s current DeFi TVL of about $176.9M, that’s nearly a 100× increase, a massive opportunity for the Cardano DeFi ecosystem. The Bitcoin community is famously conservative and generally distrusts other chains. Cardano is one of the very few smart contract platforms that matches Bitcoin’s emphasis on decentralization and security. Combined with the shared UTXO model and bridge less atomic swaps, it becomes a uniquely credible option for Bitcoin users. I'm sure that Cardano is one of the most compelling candidates for BTCFi, and atomic swaps like this could be a key catalyst in making that transition possible.
