ALRC report a 🧵
ALRC report recommends “Justice System Navigators”. They said these navigators have been recommended in other Aus jurisdictions including the ACT - well I made that ACT recommendation and I sure as hell didn’t recommend a disempowered compass for survivors.

ALRC report to be released today. There is a long history of recommendations sitting on shelves, collecting dust. This is where the rubber hits the road. We need action and recognition of the trauma caused by the system and by the constant inquiries re-describing the same problem

Evidence is still relevant to prospects of rehabilitation, allowing such evidence to continue to be presented. Discretion provided not to mitigate sentence for ‘otherwise good character’ - maintaining the ability for this evidence to be considered

& research which conclusively shows that offenders make deliberate choices based on power & control. The 'green behind the ears' myth also affords a defense for many offenders. Let's not perpetuate it. Let's listen to real experts instead. @RapeReform

& may even be dangerous bc they perpetuate the myth that sex offenders perpetrate BC of a simple information-gap in their knowledge which can be fixed with a handy 2 minute video. 🙄 Framing offenders as naive wide-eyed deers overlooks the enormous amount of literature/evidence

Mmmm'ok, so Tinder is now creating consent videos... 🧐 Will this actually deter sex offenders or is this a calculated PR stunt, designed to boost the perception of corporate social responsibility & offset negative press about Tinder rapists? Experts say the videos won't work/

Linda Reynolds is a fucking ghoul. No amount of kindly worded articles in The Australian will convince me otherwise. Of all the paths she could’ve chosen, she picked silencing and harassing survivors. History will remember you for exactly what you are.

Rape has been so systematically decriminalised in Australia as @VeraBaird famously said of the UK, but the system has emboldened an accused rapist whose case ended in mistrial due to juror misconduct and has subsequently been found to be a reasonable prosecution, to sue the state

This is of course only after attempting to sue everyone else within spitting distance, including the alleged victim herself, who exercised her basic legal right to report a crime. Oh and consistent leaks of the victims personal data to the most right wing media org in Aust.

Oh and that same media org releasing their embargoed copy of the report from the inquiry into the case, and cherry picking findings to suit. This is what injustice looks like.
