We have found observational evidence that dark matter is “heated up” at the centres of dwarf galaxies:

This solves the long-standing “cusp-core” problem in LCDM, and suggests that dark matter is a cold, collisionless, fluid.

Paper day! @IzzyGrayAstro proposes a new model for NSC formation in tiny dwarfs. Prediction: NSCs should have CMDs with >2, distinct, MS turnoffs. Some nearby CGs like OCen and M54 show exactly this behaviour, suggesting they could be accreted NSCs!

I am happy to announce my first paper is on the arXiv today! We present a new model for nuclear star cluster formation within dwarf galaxies using high-resolution cosmological simulations, including observational properties and links to globular clusters: arxiv.org/abs/2405.19286
Come and hear Physics PGR Astha Astha and Astro Prof @ReadDark talk about dwarf galaxies and dark matter in the "To Infinity and Beyond" event on 14 May: pintofscience.co.uk/event/to…
Are you an astronomer or aspiring astronomer wanting to improve your software engineering skills? Applications for Code/Astro 2024 are open! More info at semaphorep.github.io/codeast…. Application is linked at the bottom of that page. Apply by Feb 16! (Copied from Sarah Blunt :))
Interested in more than one position? No problem, apply for one and indicate that you would like to be considered for other positions in your covering letter. Come and join @surreyastro !
Would you like to join the fantastic astrophysics group at Surrey? We have 3 STFC funded postdoctoral positions in the areas of gravitational waves, dwarf galaxies and globular clusters @surreyastro
I'm hiring a postdoc in my group (@MITKavli@MIT_Physics ), working on a combination of machine learning, Dark Matter, Gaia, and simulations. The due date is FRIDAY! Please forward to interested candidates! academicjobsonline.org/ajo/j…
Last week I got to visit @DarkerMatters to give a FLAT talk, on my work with EDGE simulations and how we naturally form globular clusters within them!
Everyone was so very welcoming! Thank you all for everything and I hope to see you all again soon!
Happy Halloween🎃As we celebrate the spooky season, we'd like to share a little treat with you... a glimpse into mysterious research of a Daphne Jackson Fellow. 🔬🌌Dr Susan Hutton is a Fellow at the @UniOfSurrey, sponsored by @STFC_Matters & is searching for answers...
On my way to @OxUniMaths to deliver the Roger Penrose Lecture. I feel very honoured to be invited to give only third one in the series - after Stephen Hawking (2017) and @carlorovelli (2020).
I believe it will be available online in three weeks time.
I had a fantastic time today at the Surrey Future Fellows Festival! Amazing to see so much fascinating interdisciplinary work taking place across the university, and to hear about the exciting plans for @ReadDark's ECR academy 👏👏
We are so excited that the Stargazing nights at @UniOfSurrey are resuming! The first event will be on Wednesday 25 October at 7pm, featuring a public lecture by @ReadDark titled “How to heat up Dark Matter”, and a public stargazing session at the Surrey Telescope ✨🔭
Excited to share the first of several positions opening up in my group @GRAPPAinstitute. This one is a postdoc position on multi-messenger astrophysics with the LISA mission. Please share widely & applications from ECRs are welcome, esp. those from underrepresented gps in physics
Our very own @NoeliaNoelAstro gave a fantastic interview on @BBCSurrey to promote #WorldSpaceWeek on Saturday! 👩🚀A huge shout-out to everyone who helped make the event such a success! @michelle_lmc led the organisation, and so many @SurreyMathsPhys staff and PGRs got involved! 🚀
