Did Wilkie Collins read Charles Maturin?
One of many questions we’ll be asking @drtinamorin in our November seminar @GreenwichEng on Maturin’s 1818 novel *Women*.
Join us for a discussion of Romantic gothic over a glass of wine - all welcome!
It's the beginning of the new academic year but, sadly, our seminar series is coming to an end. Our final session will be on Charles Maturin's *Women* - you can find an ebook here: books.google.co.uk/books?id=…

Many thanks to all who contributed to the discussion @GreenwichEng on Anna Maria Porter last night and especially to Prof Fiona Price @humanities_chi who argued that heroism in Porter’s novel is related to understanding of human character. Fascinating!
BARS2019 also has a Facebook page - facebook.com/BARS2019/ . It contains a link to the CfP and conference website. We'll be regularly posting updates, reminders and blogs both on Twitter and Facebook. @BARS_official
When *The Fast of St Magdalen* was published in July 1818, The Monthly Magazine approved the novel's "correct and not inelegant diction . . . moral principles, and . . . pious sentiments," but the Edinburgh Monthly Review accused Anna Maria Porter of "hasty composition".
We’re reading Anna Maria Porter @GreenwichEng this coming Thursday at 6pm in QA075! Professor Fiona Price (Chichester) will be leading the discussion. All welcome.

In *The Fast of St Magdalen,* Porter chose the 16th century & characters whose fate is bound up with that of the Medici family. The novel went into two more English editions, a French translation, and a New York edition, plus another at Boston, all within 1818 and 1819.
If you don't have time to read the whole of Anna Maria Porter's *The Fast of St Magdalen* before our seminar this Thursday, at 6pm (@UniofGreenwich, room QA075) this page has lots of links and info about her: orlando.cambridge.org/public…
