The Jewish people were a significant part of the Ottoman Empire, regardless of any attempts to obscure that fact.
St. Kosmas of Aetolia, a great Orthodox preacher & educator under Ottoman rule, urged Christians to keep Sunday holy & move weekly markets off the Lord’s Day. This hurt the business of those who couldn’t trade on their Sabbath, Saturday.
They therefore complained, and in close cooperation with the Ottomans, slandered him as a Russian spy and influenced the Ottoman authorities.
On Aug 24, 1779, he was seized without trial & hanged. His body was also dragged by them and thrown into the river. While he was alive, he continually warned the enslaved Greeks of Jewish plots against them.
