My contribution to Spielberg/Lucas ruining Hollywood with Blockbusters discourse. My favorite George Lucas quote:

I like the idea that a private organization had to be created outside of presidential control to keep the existence of aliens hidden because Richard Nixon was just showing Jackie Gleason the bodies of Greys to impress him.

I would love to drop this pair of racist chumps down in the midst of a company of UDA men who've consumed enough coke to kill an elephant so they can tell them how impressed they are by their desire to be Irish. In fact I'll pay their air fares myself to make it happen.
Kilmeade to an agreeing Markwayne Mullin: "In Belfast they're standing up because their leaders have let them down. They're trying to take their country back. They want to label them as racist. All they want to be is Irish. They want Ireland back. And that is what we've been saying for the longest time. I see a lot of the same fights here."

Today is Robert McNamara's 110th birthday. These two similar cartoons of McNamara and LBJ, metaphorizing our policy in Southeast Asia with car salesmanship, were drawn by Paul Conrad in 1964.

Belfast thing looks very much like the loyalist paramilitary subculture redefining itself as a generic, and maybe in the fullness of time cross community, extreme-right movement

I think viewing loyalists and the Dublin and England riots in 2024 as separate things misses the point that all of these groups operate as interconnected communities of far right agitators. While their foundations may be different they are absolutely talking to each other.
As much as the events in Belfast are down to the legacy of the troubles and the stain of loyalism, this exact thing happened in Dublin in 2023 with no loyalists, it happened all over England in 2024. This is less legacy of the troubles and more just what the new-right is

Over 3 years, June & August riots have weaponised NIโ€™s summer. July traditionally reinforces a Loyalist sense of superiority over Catholics, but that hatred has now spread into full summers of hate against anyone who looks different. A new expanding cycle of cultural hostility.
