ALT A text graphic in bright orange with white text reads: Today’s announcement from the Lord Chancellor is long awaited and finally signals a recognition that women do not belong in prison.
With the highest self-harm rates on record amongst women in prison, failing care for pregnant women, and the death of 2 babies in prison in recent years, the situation has long been at crisis point.
Alongside many of our partners, we have long called for a future where the root causes of offending are addressed, and women can access the support they need in their communities.
Nicola Drinkwater, Director of External Affairs and Campaigns, Women in Prison
"We imprison women on minor charges to a far greater degree than men. Around 2/3 did not commit a violent crime. Yet they are sent into prisons that are desperate places." @ShabanaMahmood speaking today @UKLabour conference.

Donald Trump said he wants to punish women. And, as a result of his actions, today in America, one out of three women live in a state with a Trump Abortion Ban.
The events of the last week have been nothing short of deplorable. The far-right, racist & Islamophobic violence that we've seen on our streets and online has no place in our society.
We stand in solidarity with the migrant & minoritised communities who have been targeted. 1/3
Really excited to be adding more case studies to our growing collection for @ACFoundations members, this time on the vital topic of strategy and governance
Our new report today shows that people needing #councilfunerals are subject to a postcode lottery at end-of-life, in death and in #bereavement. Voluntary guidelines are not working in England and Wales and are non-existent in the rest of the UK. This cannot continue.
Down to Earth's new research suggests that over half of councils in England and Wales do not fully follow Government guidelines on #councilfunerals. Over 100 council websites surveyed, over 50 council offices phoned. Read the report. @endfuneralpovbuff.ly/4cGUUls

All those miles and all that rain and we made it even more determined by the last step than the first. This is what hope - beautiful hope - looks like! Cherish it, clean your boots and we’ll keep walking.
Nigel Farage received 12% of TV/press coverage in the election. @TheGreenParty (with 4 seats to Reform’s 5) didn’t even make top 20. Great research from @lboroCRCC shows Greens & smaller parties were especially marginalised by a press mesmerised by Farage’s anti-migrant noise
As well as these shocking conditions, HMIP found that around 60% of people detained were released without being deported. They say this “begs the question of why so much taxpayer money was being spent keeping them locked up in the first place”.
