This is quite the commentary and a wake-up call to the whole country. ⬇️
This week the most advanced AI model on the planet got switched off by a foreign government. British researchers were studying it. British companies were testing it. British hospitals were piloting it. Not any more. This isn't an AI story. It's the story of every industry we used to lead. Britain has some of the best AI talent in the world. DeepMind was built here. Our AI Safety Institute writes the rules other countries follow. We have the researchers, the universities, the standards. What we don't have is the power stations to run the data centres, the planning system to build them, or the industrial base to make the chips. So the work happens here and the value lands somewhere else. We invent. Others build. Others decide. Then we read about it on Saturday morning. Same story as the kit our soldiers don't have. Same story as the factories we used to. I spent nine months in government making this argument inside the room. I'll make it louder from outside.

I pay tribute to the brave Royal Marine Commandos who boarded a Russian shadow fleet oil tanker overnight in the English Channel. Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine is funded by their oil exports in defiance of sanctions. As Leader of the Opposition, I support the Government in standing with Ukraine.
UK has intercepted Russian shadow fleet oil tanker attempting to go through English Channel, says PM Keir Starmer bbc.in/4vsOgc5

The SNP has created their own secret Scotland. Their nationalist instinct is to conceal, deflect and to obstruct access to information. They will resort to any tactic to stop the public from getting at the truth about them and what they are up to. Now an independent officer of the Scottish Parliament has accused the Scottish Government of arrogance, disrespect for scrutiny and acting as though the rules do not apply to them. That should alarm everyone. The SNP promised transparency. Scotland got secrecy. The SNP promised openness. Scotland got obstruction. And when legitimate questions are asked, ministers seem more interested in protecting themselves than providing answers. The public are entitled to ask: what is it that the SNP is so desperate to keep hidden? scotsman.com/news/politics/w…

Ruth Davidson is right. Aberdeen South is on a knife-edge. Only Douglas Lumsden can beat the SNP. A vote for any other party risks handing the seat straight back to the Nationalists. If pro-UK voters unite behind Douglas, we can win. If the vote is split, the SNP wins. Every vote matters. Every vote counts. scotsman.com/news/politics/f…

We are living in an extremely dangerous world.
But John Healey’s resignation letter revealed that Starmer and Reeves are refusing to properly fund our military. It’s time to cut welfare spending to fund our defence. @TomTugendhat

In five years as an MP, the SNP candidate in Aberdeen South spent more time campaigning to break up the UK than standing up for North Sea oil and gas jobs. On 18 June, vote @DLumsden_MSP to elect a proven oil and gas champion who will stand up for our energy industry.

The resignations of the Defence Secretary and Armed Forces Minister confirm what I've being saying since last year, including at the London Defence Conference in April. We need to get serious. We need to rearm. The @Conservatives will cut welfare spending to fund our military.

Parents must be listened to. For too long, families who raised concerns about maternity services have felt ignored, dismissed or left fighting for answers. This review will only have credibility if bereaved parents and affected families are involved from the outset and their experiences are at its heart. Families deserve more than promises. They deserve transparency, accountability and a determination to ensure that lessons are learned and mistakes are never repeated. Trust is rebuilt by listening to those who have lived through failure, not by talking over them. heraldscotland.com/news/2618…

I have written to the Minister for Public Finance, Hannah Mary Goodlad, raising my concerns about the growing number of large-scale data centre applications coming forward across Scotland. The issue is not whether Scotland should have data centres. We need investment, jobs and the infrastructure that will support a modern economy. The problem is that the Scottish Government has failed to provide the national framework needed to assess them properly. Questions about power consumption, water use, grid capacity, waste heat recovery, environmental impact and alignment with Scotland's wider energy strategy cannot simply be left to individual planning committees to work out as they go along. Equally, councils cannot simply invent moratoriums or make up their own rules. That risks costly legal challenges, planning appeals and yet more expense for taxpayers. Communities deserve answers. Investors deserve certainty. Local authorities deserve clear guidance. Once again, ministers have been far too slow to get ahead of an issue that was entirely foreseeable. Scotland needs a coherent national strategy for data centres, not confusion, delay and policy made up on the hoof.heraldscotland.com/news/2618…

This is what the arrogance of power looks like. SNP bosses in South Lanarkshire were warned. They were given legal advice. They were offered a chance to settle for £170,000. Instead, they pressed on, lost on every count, and left taxpayers with a bill just short of £1 million. Facilities are now closing, hours are being cut, charges are rising - and still no one has been held to account. David Watson says he raised his concerns with Nicola Sturgeon and Peter Murrell. They ignored him. That tells you everything. The SNP stopped listening long ago. From Sturgeon to Swinney, the attitude is the same: detached, dismissive, and convinced they know better than everyone else. When public money is wasted, when legal warnings are ignored, when whistleblowers are frozen out, and when ordinary services pay the price, the public are entitled to answers. This is not just incompetence. It is the arrogance of power. heraldscotland.com/news/2618…

Tim Shipman’s interview with @KemiBadenoch in this week’s Spectator is really worth a read. What stands out is the clarity. Clear about who Conservatives are for. Clear about who Conservatives are not for. Clear about work, personal responsibility, law and order, and a shared national culture. Too much of modern politics is vague, evasive and carefully focus-grouped to offend nobody. Kemi Badenoch is different. She says what she believes and is prepared to defend it. Whether you agree with every position or not, there is something so refreshing about a politician who gives a straight answer to a straight question.

BREAKING: Today’s GDP figures show the economy shrank in April. Cabinet Ministers have said that Labour’s economic plan doesn’t give you ‘confidence’ and that all Labour MPs do is ask ‘who can we tax in order to pay for benefits’ - and now Labour’s Defence Secretary has resigned because Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves cannot make hard choices. Putting Benefits Street first leaves the economy weaker. Only the @Conservatives have a plan to get Britain working again.
