What do you mean "why" he backs up in this sequence? DLS feints to the body and attempts to close the distance. In response to this, Shakur "steps back". DLS follows up with more punches trying to find an opening and pins Shakur to the ropes before engaging in the clinch.
It's extremely obvious and simple why Shakur backs up... because DLS is moving forward and throwing punches. I'd assume anybody with half a brain could figure that out, but I guess not. I'm not going to break down each punch in these sequences like I did with the Lamont Roach video because that isn't the point here. The point is Shakur's tendency to over rely on stepping back when fighting southpaw opponents.
Throughout the majority of the fight, Shakur has responded to DLS's offense this exact same way... this isn't just one cherry picked sequence. DLS used a variety offense tactics in an attempt to make Shakur open up.
Getting pushed back from the center of the ring to the ropes and being forced to clinch is NOT a good thing, anyway you look at it. You're letting your opponent control the ring, even if he's not landing clean. In this fight, Shakur was able to manage DLS, but against a more patient southpaw with superior punch selection and timing, don't you think this could be a serious issue?
And this is a closed stance issue with Shakur. If you watch the Valdez fight, Shakur was able to counter off the back foot, circle and reset before his back even touched the ropes consistently.
This is 1/8th of a video that is pointing out flaws in a fighter's game, not a punch by punch, sequence by sequence breakdown, I've got other videos for that.
