The World Cup is here and our neighbors in Seattle are hosting their first game today! As we celebrate the diversity that inevitably arrives with this level of global representation, it is important to also recognize our similarities. In addition to fielding teams of athletes, each of these countries has something else in common — fielding a society within the Red Cross and Red Crescent movement where volunteers are the beating heart of the mission. 💓 Click here to read more: rdcrss.org/3SHZTgp

We're ONE WEEK out from our annual Dr. Charles Drew blood drive! Join us as we honor Dr. Charles R. Drew, a revolutionary African American surgeon, educator and scientist who laid the groundwork for today’s modern blood donation program through his innovative work in blood banking. He introduced bloodmobiles and helped improve the reach and accessibility of the Red Cross to potential donors in the community. Dr. Charles Drew lived by the mantra “excellence of performance will transcend artificial barriers created by man” and believed the quality of his work would ascend beyond the racially segregated society in which he lived. Blood donors will receive a special Dr. Charles Drew t-shirt and a $15 e-gift card! Book your appointment at RedCrossBlood.Org😀

It was only a few years ago that John and his wife were forced to evacuate their home near Mulino when a forest fire came dangerously close to it. John is a former forester with the US Dept of Forestry and had taken precautions around his rural home, like installing a metal roof and large holding tank of water. John is also hard of hearing and his family worried about his ability to hear if a smoking alarm went off. They called the Red Cross and asked for one of our FREE bed shaker alarms that are specifically designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. Volunteers Henry Bodkin and Holland Golec installed the device and tested it out. “He was so impressed, he could really feel it. It was one of the best smoke alarm visits I ever had,” said Golec. Leaving families with a peace of mind. That’s one of the benefits of being a Red Cross volunteer. Learn more about how you can receive a free smoke alarm or sign up to become one of our incredible volunteers by going to RedCross.org

We are entering wildfire season and you can help by becoming a shelter volunteer. Support your community and your neighbors by putting on the red vest. It's easy to do and the training is free! Learn more at Redcross.org/volunteer As a Shelter Service Associate, you’ll help create a safe, welcoming environment for people displaced by disasters. Volunteering in Red Cross shelters, you’ll support day-to-day operations—whether it’s greeting clients, assisting with registration, serving meals, managing dormitory spaces, or providing information and support. No experience needed! Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4 to 12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts, is required. We can't do it without our volunteers. Help us deliver our mission as we enter this wildfire season.

No one expects a home fire. However, home fires are the most frequent disaster we respond to on a daily basis. They can start quickly and spread even faster. Robert Williams, experienced this first hand: "It started as a routine afternoon for Robert Williams—a simple plan to fry fish on the back deck for his family. But on March 28th, a small ignition turned into a life-altering emergency in an instant. As heating oil caught fire, Robert’s attempts to extinguish it only worsened the situation as the flames quickly spread to outdoor curtains before pushing deep into the home. While neighbors rushed over and firefighters fought to contain the blaze, the damage was extensive. The fire tore through the living room, up the ceiling, and toward the second floor, leaving the family displaced and facing a future of sudden uncertainty." This is the kind of work we do week after week. This week alone, we responded to 15 home fires, assisting 30 adults and 7 children. We are there to lend a helping hand on people's worst days, today, and always. Read more about Robert's experience here: rdcrss.org/4uLPHSm

In honor of CPR & AED Awareness week, let's take a moment to remember how important knowing these lifesaving skills is: Just over 70% of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home, so the life you may save could be a family member or a friend. Survival chances decrease by 10% for every minute that immediate CPR and use of an AED is delayed. Sign-up for a CPR class at RedCross.org/CPR!

Be like Chuck! Chuck Albin is a regular donor and the ladies who work blood services know him by name. Ruth, Joy, and Ashley work hard to ensure every donor feels special and they are comfortable while donating blood. Making a blood donation appointment is incredibly important right now. A sharp drop in scheduled donations is especially troubling now, during a season when blood collection can be difficult due to end of the school-year activities, travel and school breaks, as well as severe weather and heat that can disrupt blood drives entirely. Visit RedCrossBlood.org to make your appointment now.

This is your reminder that severe wildfires scar our beautiful nature and takes forests decades to recover, if at all. Wildfire season is around the corner and we ask that you help us prevent wildfires. When you're out camping, remember these key tips: 1. Only have a fire in a fire pit ringed by stones 2. Never leave your fire unattended 3. Don't have a campfire on a windy day 4. Ensure your fire is fully extinguished before leaving

This is what Red Cross commitment looks like. Rebecca O'Rourke (pictured left) is a dedicated employee who just marked 15 years at the Red Cross. Rebecca started with the Red Cross in Southern California 15 years ago as a Business Development Representative. She later moved to Bend, Oregon 9 years ago and took on the role of Account Manager, overseeing the rural communities in Central and Eastern Oregon. She is incredibly skilled at donor recruitment, relationship building and excels at Power Red conversions. She is such a great team mate and is a joy to work with. We are lucky to have Rebecca on our team! Join us in celebrating Rebecca 🎉🎊

When we're not responding, we're training and training with partners is EVEN better! This Tuesday, in Klamath Falls, we held a Shelter Fundamental Training with Oregon Department of Human Services Office of Resiliency Management and Kingsley Field Air National Guard. We practiced setting up a shelter, getting cots ready and making sure we know how to provide the best service for those affected by disasters.
