The Supreme Court has clearly mandated that the top league under AIFF must be owned and operated by AIFF and must have promotion and relegation.
One practical way to resolve the current dilemma is to revert the ISL to its original structure as a private tournament with no relegation, owned and operated by the ISL clubs and sanctioned by AIFF.
The I-League should be reinstated as the top tier, with its champion qualifying for AFC competitions. ISL clubs that aspire to play in Asia can also participate in the I-League, creating more matches for players and more home fixtures for clubs to build commercial value.
