In 1999, Stephen Abas went 37-1 and defeated Penn State’s Jeremy Hunter 7-4 in State College to win the NCAA title at 125 lbs. Abas became Fresno State’s first wrestling national champion since 1968. It was the first of three NCAA titles for the future Olympic silver medalist.

Still the most impressive part of the whole run to the title. ASU had 15 draft picks, was 38-3 at home that year, & Dogs had to beat ‘em there twice in a row.

18 years ago The Wonderdogs took down a giant in Tempe. After dropping Gm1, the Dogs answered with an 8-6 win in Gm2 & a 12-9 victory in Gm3. Home runs by Detwiler, Hedstroms grand slam, Mendonca & Susdorf all helped Fresno State knock off the #3-ranked Sun Devils to reach Omaha.

05/26/1988 Fresno St opened the NCAA Regional at Beiden Field with a 10-8, 10-inning battle over Minnesota. Bryan Marsoobian drove in a run, then Zosky to Pearse to Shebelut to turn the game-ending double play. Dogs’ finished 56-12, won the regional & punched a ticket to Omaha
