On one of my first shows I was working 16 hours days for 6 months straight including weekends. I was struggling with the work load and told my boss several times I needed help but was told "theres no help available and you will get faster over time everyone goes through this" 1/2

I turn in my last episode 2 weeks late, suffering from burnout. On my last day I passed around the crew a book to sign like a yearbook. The book gets to my boss and they say, to my face, "Mind if I give this back to you two weeks late?" Was radicalized immediately. 2/2

Nearly every client I’ve ever had asks for more poses or to break up long scenes. Whenever we add in beats to let the scene or audience breathe it’s asked to be cut. Scripts nowadays are nearly all dialogue.

Animation veteran Frans Vischer's (Cats Don't Dance, Mickey's Christmas Carol, Roger Rabbit) take on Wish. Important to see an animator pinpoint the exact problems with the animation itself, since the regular viewer might not know how to get across those specific critiques.

It’s as if clients are afraid that if something isn’t moving on screen at all times the audience is gonna immediately lose interest.

I feel like people are grabbing the wrong message from this. It’s not that modern animators are intentionally avoiding referencing real life or pulling from experience- it’s that big studios are no longer asking for it.
Not a day passes that I’m not reminded of these words from Ric Sluiter, art director of LILO & STITCH. vulture.com/2022/10/an-oral-…

Studios don’t want to spend money to risk a new animation style or on a story that’s not universally digestible by the largest demographic possible. They want to make something that will make them the most amount of money the cheapest way possible with the least amount of risk

So yeah, Sluiter is right- it’s all formulaic because clients tell us to “make it LOOK spiderverse but we don’t want to PAY for spiderverse”. If you wanna kill the math you gotta kill the algorithm because that’s what decides what gets made and how.

btw these conditions aren't exclusive to just WB, it's a Canadian industry wide issue. But unionizing the largest Canadian studio would be a huge step in the right direction towards Canadian animation worker's rights.

I love my job and I love this industry, but as it is now I can't afford kids and I cant afford to ever retire. I just want to be able to do what I do in a healthy and sustainable way, ya know?
