The solution to America’s growing energy demand might already be on our roads. As millions of EV batteries retire from vehicles, many still have years of useful life left. Redwood Energy redeploys them as grid-scale storage today, powering data centers and strengthening the grid, before we recover their critical minerals at end-of-life.

The future of energy isn't just about making new things, it's about getting more out of what we've already built. Redwood's Chief Commercial officer, Cal Lankton sat down with @live_munro and @arocha_jordan to talk second-life batteries, grid resilience, and 7.2 MWh of repurposed @GM packs in action.
Great time at the @GM Empower Event in San Francisco connecting with leaders shaping the future of energy and transportation. A highlight was catching up with @RedwoodMat and hearing from Cal Lankton about Redwood's plan to deploy ~100 repurposed GM battery packs at a Michigan GM plant, creating a 1.5 MW / 7.2 MWh energy storage system. @arocha_jordan sat down with Cal to discuss how giving EV batteries a second life can support energy resilience and a more sustainable future.

Thanks for stopping by our Tahoe campus and diving into the details of how we’re building a true battery ecosystem! We're leading the nation in critical battery material recovery and also building the largest microgrids in North America out of repurposed batteries! If you like "nerding" out on stuff like this, we are growing our San Francisco and Tahoe campus!
We're launching a new Factory Tour series with a bang. Went to Nevada to hang with JB Straubel @RedwoodMat to see how they turn old batteries into elements like lithium and cobalt. Come, nerds. We got you. youtube.com/watch?v=GSSgAPyl…

Colorado’s EV battery recycling bill was signed into law, establishing the most comprehensive EV battery management framework in the U.S. At Redwood, we know that end-of-life EV batteries are not waste. They are valuable assets, whether for energy storage or critical mineral recovery. The framework prioritizes repurposing before recycling, supporting domestic energy storage deployment and extending the productive life of these assets. It establishes a clear recycler standard requiring actual extraction, separation, or refining of materials. It sets strong recovery standards with appropriate phase-in timelines, takes an outcome-based approach rather than banning specific technologies, and preserves direct manufacturer-recycler relationships rather than routing through a centralized stewardship organization designed for negative-value waste products. Redwood works across the full battery lifecycle, from second-life energy storage tomaterial recovery, and we've been working on end-of-life policy diligently.. As other states take up this topic, we're ready to be a resource for the partners and policymakers working to get this right. For more on what's in the law and how we're thinking about it: recyclingtoday.com/news/colo…

“I think we should be really worried.” @Tesla cofounder and CEO of @RedwoodMat JB Straubel warned at #BrainstormTech that China's pace of infrastructure development is moving at a scale and speed that's difficult for many Americans to grasp. bit.ly/4xkvVyY

Today, we're announcing the latest chapter of our partnership with @GM. Redwood will deploy 1.5 MW / 7.2 MWh of dispatchable energy storage at a GM manufacturing facility in Michigan, built from ~100 repurposed GM battery packs. The U.S. holds a massive and growing stockpile of domestic battery assets. The question is whether those batteries stay here as American energy infrastructure or whether that value leaves the country. With this deployment, GM and Redwood are proving it can stay here. This makes GM the first automaker to partner with Redwood across every stage of the battery lifecycle. Redwood already recycles manufacturing scrap from @UltiumCells, GM's battery joint venture with LG Energy Solution, and receives GM EV packs for repurposing or recycling. This deployment puts those same packs back to work on the manufacturing floor. American-made batteries powering American industry, with critical minerals kept in domestic supply chains. The full battery lifecycle managed domestically. From the manufacturing line to the road to the grid. redwoodmaterials.com/news/ge…

"In a moment defined by grid bottlenecks and soaring demand, Redwood is rethinking how energy infrastructure can be built — and reused."   Fast Company spent time with us at Redwood to dig into how we are building domestic energy storage infrastructure from batteries that already exist, at roughly half the cost of new systems, and where this is headed as the wave of end-of-life batteries continues to grow.
Redwood Materials founder and CEO JB Straubel transformed what batteries could do at Tesla. Now he's doing it again, changing the way data centers—and the entire energy grid—are powered. f-st.co/naJ4as8

Last year, we deployed a 12 MW/63 MWh microgrid - the world’s largest second-life battery system - to power @CrusoeAI. Since then, it’s delivered 99.2% uptime. Now, we’re scaling from 4 to 24 Crusoe modular data centers; nearly 7x the original compute capacity. A new model for AI infrastructure: faster to deploy, more flexible, and built on low-cost, reliable energy. redwoodmaterials.com/news/re…
