Super excited that our new paper is out today in @pnas. Title: Lateral jaw motion in fish expands the functional repertoire of vertebrates and underpins the success of a dominant herbivore lineage. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.24…

Congratulations to five emerging Australian scientists who are the recipients of the Academy's J G Russell Award! 🎉The funding will help with costs involved in experimental research and can be used towards equipment, maintenance and travel. The talented early-career scientists are drawn from diverse fields, including Dr Marcus Giansiracusa whose research @UniMelb is exploring novel applications of Australia's rare-earth mineral resources to make advanced technologies, including quantum computers, more efficient. The future of computing and electronics could be right under our feet! Other awardees: Dr Morgan Li(@Sydney_Uni)—investigating how microplastics move through natural environments and working to increase public awareness about this pollution. Dr Sarah Piper(@MonashUni)—using advanced structural biology techniques to understand how the PAC1 receptor, a crucial protein in cell communication, functions and how its variations affect it. Dr Alexandre Siqueira(@EdithCowanUni)—studying the history of coral reefs to identify factors that supported productive fish populations, aiming to inform current conservation efforts. Dr Laura Williams(@westernsydneyu)—researching the origins and ecological consequences of the diverse eucalypt tree species across Australia using spectroscopic data and vegetation modelling. #EMCR Learn more: science.org.au/news-and-even…

Water plays many important roles in habitat. It transports nutrients and sediments, can aid in the recruitment of new organisms, and can even influence how much energy organisms require to live within it. rpb.li/zRVP

More evidence to show that not everything fits perfectly into “boxes” in ecology; embracing the nuances paints a better picture
When thinking of the 'model' planktivore on reefs, fusiliers come to mind – their fusiform bodies and large eyes seem built for the job. But are these traits common among most plankton-feeding reef fishes? 🐟 🔗 The story is more nuanced than we thought: doi.org/10.1007/s11160-025-0…

Science and Society! Where does one sit within the other? Turns out, plenty of opinions abound! And that's just within scientists working on novel marine climate intervention! Great new paper led by @Lawless_Sarah_ It's #OpenAccess! 👇 nature.com/articles/s44183-0…

New @npjOceanSustain paper finds tension in responsibility debates among 243 scientists working on ocean-climate innovations. Debates oscillated between protecting scientific autonomy at one extreme, & moral duty for socially just futures at the other rdcu.be/dVqLU 1/3
