As referees, all we can control is our own preparation. Ensure you are fit and mobile enough to move around the pitch and give yourself the best possible opportunity to make the correct decision. Keep up to date with the LOTG and listen to those who offer advice ⚽️🏟

Shall we breakdown the THREE red cards in the opening game of the World Cup? Willie Sampaio 1) DOGSO. Fulfils the criteria, outside the area, simple? 2) Violent Conduct? I’m not sure. Excessive force or brutality? Not for me. 3) DOGSO. Purely tactical free kick…

One that many fans hate seeing happen against them. The next pass, is possibly a pass across the area. However, does it fulfil the criteria? Not in my opinion. Don’t moan about officials in the premier league when this is Brazils best. Refereed France England in Qatar 22.

Little conversation over the past 24 hours regarding the need for referees. This simply, is no longer the case. Whilst your local grassroots league, may have games going uncovered. Those in the pyramid don’t. They are fully covered, every single weekend.

There is a distinct lack of MOs in the system who are at an age where they can reach FIFA/UEFA. The FA and PGMO see this as a problem. The quality must improve. They are trying to rectify this with a number of development groups. The two most recent ones…

The national performance centre and elite group, are looking to counteract this and give development opportunities to MOs, outside of the usual pathways. This is to, apparently, improve standards, but also, to create a pathway so the FA and PGMO can hit their targets.

The FA are no longer providing kit to match officials at steps 2-6. New kit can cost a referee £100. Quite steep and for some, 2/3 match fees & they have put up registration fees. Too many mates being given roles within the organisation who have no strategic leadership skills.

Here we go! Let’s kick things off with an easy one! Why aren’t there more foreign officials in the Premier League? There are a number of reasons why this is the case. I’ll try to add a few… 1) only a limited number of full time positions in the PL.

7) They aren’t always better! English teams have competed very well for a long time and therefore we haven’t seen MO or AT in the latter stages of the competitions. We rarely see much of what happens abroad, but I promise you, fans aren’t as happy as you probably are!

8) Brexit! I’m sure it’s an issue. I have hopefully covered a lot of the reasons why an official may not just come over here. This is my understanding of it all and you’ll have your own opinions.

Here we are, 1st June! The one month of the year when the FA, for whatever reasons, don’t allow football! I’ve had a weird idea to peel back the curtain on some of the things that I see in the game, and ways it can be improved. Is there anything you want to see or talk about?

Most exciting thing to happen on that half was the referee blowing for half time as Saka delayed taking a corner. Is he playing bingo?

Most people notice it’s your first Sunday league game within 25 seconds.
Settle an office debate. Say fitness wasn’t an issue, would you back yourself to referee the Champions League final and have no one notice that you’re not an actual professional ref?

I’m generally what to support officials or look to justify and explain some reasoning or logic as to why a decision may have been given This past week has been some dark days for VAR and has set the whole system back, quite a few years. Fans never forget.

How is this not a red card? What is the justification?
