So... I made a video game... and now you can buy it. SkyShard is a city building auto battler, and I think it's pretty damn fun (so do the 96% positive reviewers on our demo). It just launched in Early Access at $11.99, a 20% launch discount (with regional pricing too). This literally would not be possible without all the support I've gotten over the years. Thank you!!

Heard the news that Alex Cimo, a fellow card game YouTuber, has passed away. I did not know him. I can offer some math for those who did. People collectively spent about 4,232 years watching his videos. So 32 years is all he got, but he gave the world an extra 4,200 years of laughs, knowledge, and peace, one view at a time. That's one hell of a life.

Steam just made a change that's really gonna hurt future indie games. The Popular Upcoming page used to list games chronologically by release time. As long as you had enough wishlists to make the cut (~6k to 7k), you'd get some time at the top of the list for people to discover your game. Now it's listed algorithmically, with far more large games from major companies and publishers on the list, even those releasing two weeks away. The lowest wishlist count on there right now is 80k, when before it would've been 10 indie games as low as 6k wishlists. Feeling very lucky our game's early access release barely made it out before this changed. It was worth probably 1k wishlists for us, and we had some really unfortunate timing/positioning too. It can be worth thousands of wishlists and sales for smaller games. Steam is more heavily prioritizing larger games, with the budget and time to grow to enormous wishlist totals, or the rare indie viral hit. The small to mid-sized games just lost a way to find players. Steam players lost a tool to discover cool smaller games.

This post broke containment. I gotta mute it so I can sleep. Guess I gotta start a channel covering indie games and news and marketing stuff, huh?

Tagging @IndieGameJoe for some extra visibility on this, hadn't seen it come up much yet.

If you're ever curious what YouTube's auto-generated AI thumbnails look like, don't open the box!! It just gives you Mr. Beast's face and teeth. Certainly on brand to merge two characters together, but I look 10 years older and 100 times scarier.

If you like Marvel super heroes in your digital card games, this news might interest you. A bit surprised by this, would've expected Marvel Snap to have some exclusivity within their category as a part of their license. The cards I've seen look pretty cool. I suspect I'd hate Marvel in MTG if I was an MTG guy, but coming from the other direction, it's intriguing.

I've often questioned what Marvel Snap possibly could do to bring players back to the game. Today I got my answer. (am I even allowed to show these on YouTube)

Is it possible for card game companies to go one day without self-inflicted PR disasters?

This week in the games I follow: Hearthstone finally terminated its long-abandoned game mode. Marvel Snap laid off employees without any kind of messaging, letting rumors and doomposting get out of control. Magic the Gathering apparently prominently showcased plagiarized art.

Ben Brode has addressed the layoffs on the Marvel Snap team:

There were layoffs today at Second Dinner, the team behind Marvel Snap. My absolute best wishes to those impacted, you never want to see people lose their livelihood. The gaming industry has been brutal lately, and I hate seeing it hit so close to home. Already seeing a lot of questions about the future of the game, from players and creators alike, with a fair bit of doom and gloom too, understandably. I think it's reasonable to worry, but I also think the game has a lot more time. That said, I couldn't blame anyone for being careful with their investments of time and money. Second Dinner should address players and future commitment to the game. I do not know how many people were laid off. Here are some things I do know. I can confirm it was from multiple disciplines, at least Engineering, Community, and QA. One affected person said that it was due to "cost cutting". Second Dinner still lists open positions for Marvel Snap. They are currently hiring at least two people for the game. All public estimates of Marvel Snap's player counts show significant downward trends. Second Dinner is also working on another game that's described as "multi-platform" and features a "huge IP". I often worry that Marvel Snap has become a much lower priority to the team than their next game, and this news only reinforces that concern. This could be more indicative of wider industry trends than anything specific to Marvel Snap. Likely a mix of both. I don't really have a takeaway here. Just wanted to inform and share my thoughts as best I could, since some people mysteriously look to me for guidance.
