Roman history anyone? There's a re-run of my 'Ultimate Rome' series, starting at 9.00 pm on BBC4 bon Monday. With a new intro by me! tinyurl.com/497tfsdv
We all know that Rome built the world's greatest wonders:
The Pantheon. Appian Way. Colosseum
But there was one Roman wonder in particular, that came head and shoulders above the rest... 🧵
A pair of gold earrings depicting the goddess Nike, crafted around 225-175 BC during the Hellenistic period. Adorned with glass inlays, these intricate pieces are part of The J. Paul Getty Museum collection.
Researchers once thought the victims were bejeweled women, but DNA identified them as men
The genomes of the victims showed lineages from Eastern Mediterranean countries, North Africa, and areas corresponding to modern-day Turkey, Lebanon, and Italy.

A fancy #Roman leather #shoe, a so-called carbatina. It's made of a single piece of leather and decorated with openwork and carefully arrangements of loops.
The size (lenght 28 cm) suggests that it was worn by a tall person (or by a short person with very large feet).
For every retweet this tweet gets, I’ll donate 5 euros to the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary, to a maximum of 100 euros. To make your own donation, follow the link to their website. To learn more about the sanctuary and their work, read this thread. ❤️ gattidiroma.net

An #amber perfume pot, decorated with Cupids making wine, and the wine cup and panthers of the god Dionysus-Bacchus. The Romans believed amber, the fossilized resin of trees, was apotropaic (protective) and had healing properties.
Roman, Aquileia, 100-120 CE

ALT Rear of the red and orangish amber perfume pot, with light streaming through the stone. Here, we can see a winged cupid on either side, and a panther lying below the Cupid on the right. On the front are grape vines and a kantharos (traditional Greek wine cup of the god Dionysus-Bacchus). The top has a circular opening, and the stone has been carved out to store perfume. It would have had a plug or stopper once, now lost.
This perfume pot is from Aquileia, which was the center of the amber trade in the Roman world. Workshops in the city created beautiful objects like this from raw amber, which was then sold throughout the empire.
