I wonder what Tolkein thinks about being cited in an encyclical: The twentieth-century Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien, in the words of a protagonist in one of his novels, described our responsibility in this way: β€œIt is not our part to master all the tides of the world,

The DoW just clarified this: we are Catholics and no longer called Roman Catholics
Protestant friends. Please stop calling the Roman Catholics "Catholics." We are catholics. I humbly suggest Romanist Papist Or just Roman Catholic.

I am not a fan of celebrity exorcists. But... The UFOs are demons thing is sort of the argument that Lewis makes in That Hideous Strength: demons try to get atheists to believe in only the demonic side of the supernatural by pretending to be science fiction stuff.

So, the lesson is: stay away from all ghosts and tarot cards and UFOs and every other thing that purports to offer super powers through special secret knowledge. This is even true of some quasi-religious things. If your power source doesn't explicitly worship God, stay away.

Consciousness does not determine worth. Usefulness does not determine worth. Our worth is determined by how much we are loved, and even if a mother should forsake her child, God still loves them. No one can declare anyone worthless whom God loves.
How many animals have you eaten this past week? Slaughtered just for you. Are you a second-hand murderer as well? Wouldn’t you agree that a cow or pig crying and screaming as its throat is slit has significantly more consciousness than an 18-week old fetus? β€œBut it’s different because we EAT them and they’re not human…We’re made in God’s image.” - will this be some version of the response thou Holy one?

I don't think anyone ever went to hell for eating meat on a Friday, but I think some people have gone to heaven because they didn't.

Since on a legal technicality, Friday penance can be anything, I like to give up King Size Snickers Bars and restrict myself to normal-sized Snickers. Or a person could feel obligated to give up meat as all Catholics always have and as the USCCB has called upon us to do.

Normalize shaming baby murder.
90% of people who are told their fetus will have Down syndrome end the pregnancy. Virtually none talk about it. This is common and yet shrouded in shame. I’m not sure piling more shame onto it helps anyone, although I’m sure it makes some people feel morally superior.

This is unspeakably sad. It's wrong -- crushingly, gravely, sorrowfully, and heinously wrong. I'm convinced what makes a difference is to pray that Christ will be known to every person invovled. Pia and Max are gonna do that. Let's do that.
This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21. The choice was not made lightly. We really appreciate all of the personal stories that you guys shared with us, especially the unconditional support we received from fans with no matter what we decided. I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news. We are devastated. This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley. She underwent the procedure earlier this week and is on the mend. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, but emotionally we are drained. Trisomy 21, also known as Down Syndrome, is caused by an extra chromosome. It is caused by an error in cell division, like a glitch. The odds of a baby having it is 1 in 1000. When I first confronted this news, I was shocked but optimistic. If they’re a little slow intellectually, then we’ll make it work. I signed on to be a parent, come what may…but I just didn’t fully understand what Down Syndrome entailed. Once we made it public, it became clear that MOST people don’t know what Down Syndrome entails (and no, it’s not the same as Autism): 50% of babies with DS have heart defects. 75% will have hearing challenges. Over 50% will have vision problems. Impaired immune function, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, delayed physical development, poor muscle tone, structural issues with face, decreased lifespan, etc…Sadly, the list is long, feel free to look it up…Down Syndome isn’t a β€œblessing”, it is objectively shitty from a health perspective. I didn’t realize just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family…more often than not, they would be fully dependent on others for the rest of their life. The miscarriage risk is also close to 50%, which made matters worse…they may never see the light of day and it puts Ashley further at risk. We spoke with doctors, friends, family and genetic counselors and learned that up to 90% of women terminate their pregnancy after learning the baby has Trisomy 21. This was WAY higher than I expected, I thought it would be lower given that I hear so many say they kept or would keep the baby. I believe that’s because most terminations happen privately, it feels shameful. A lot of judgment being cast. You never think you’d be in this type of situation until it happens to you and then things change. To all of my fans who have weighed in on this topic who have Autism, Down Syndrome or any other conditions…we appreciate you. You matter a lot and we’re glad you’re here. I commend you and your families for having the strength and courage to push forward. As for us, we made a difficult decision that we believe in the long-run will be beneficial for our family. Thankfully, we had a choice. It will take a little time to move on, but we are excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome. Love you guys & thank you for understanding. ❀️

Ironic Libertarian fantasy that takes for granted the US Navy making international waters a pirate-free zone.
Plans released for a $16 billion mile-long ship capable of carrying 80,000 people. The 'Freedom Ship' would be home to about 50,000 people, with space for 10,000 tourists and 20,000 crew members. "The Freedom Ship is envisioned as a permanently mobile city at sea designed for long-term residence rather than short-term travel," the company says. The ship would be about 8 times the size of the current largest ship in the world, the Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. The plans include a 15,000-seat stadium, schools, colleges, shops, clubs, a water park, a music hall, museums, parks, and more. The ship, which would run on nuclear, would be too large to dock and would remain in international waters. Freedom Cruise International says it would go around the world every two to three years. Insane.

Replying to @PerkinsHammer
I have trips to Utah and Hawaii planned this year, and one train trip from Winona to Seattle would solve four of them.

Having just listened to an audiobook about the Dead Sea Scrolls whose author used BCE/CE, that replacement is not only dumb, but also obnoxious to listen to.

Celebrating Mass without a server is something that might be necessary in prison, but is definitely not traditional.
From 4:00 a.m. onwards, each priest can celebrate his own Mass in one of the three tents set up with several altars. This was one of them.

SSPX arguments are bad. But...auxiliary bishops are ordained without the intention of jurisdiction, without any jurisdiction in their titular see (imagine if one tried to exert authority there). Saying a bishop is invalid if ordained without the intention of jurisdiction is wrong

Washing machines caused a loss of 16,000 laundress jobs per month in the US. The elimination of those 16,000 jobs is a good thing. They cannot have been important human work if they can be replaced by AI. But what do those people do now? Is there good work waiting for them?
NEW: πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈArtificial intelligence is already causing a loss of 16,000 jobs per month in the US, per Goldman Sachs.

In the ultimate irony, this quote is the justification for a preemptive strike on Mordor without even the hint of attempting to dialogue with Sauron.
In his first encyclical, Pope Leo XIV quotes J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” β€œIt is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till.” (Photo: Vatican Media)
