My kiddo stopped talking as a result of the trauma he suffered. He communicated by barking. For months I didn't understand why. Until a stranger asked him. He barked because everyone likes dogs, so he thought if he acted like a dog...the staff would like him. #RemoveTheRoom

People like @RemoveTheRoom have been trying to raise this issue for years, but they have largely been ignored. Hopefully headlines like this will help put the issue back in focus.

GIFT ARTICLE Children as young as four locked away for hours in school 'seclusion rooms' The 100 accounts were collected by the International Coalition Against Restraint and Seclusion, which plans to submit them to the United Nations in the autumn as evidence that the UK Government has failed to comply with a 2023 UN recommendation that seclusion be banned as a disciplinary measure in schools. inews.co.uk/news/children-ag…

The same thing is happening here in NI. Our Dept of Education are refusing to acknowledge how Seclusion will continue as an undocumented therefore unregulated practice under the name of Isolation, Internal Suspension, Detention etc It's not abolished, just renamed.
ā€œThese accounts are a damning indictment of Westminster’s failure to act on seclusion as a disciplinary practice in England’s schools,ā€ says Becky Gillespie who heads ICARS’ UK division. ā€œThe harm to children and families is horrifying.ā€ 'I found my SEND son sobbing': Inside the damaging school isolation rooms inews.co.uk/news/i-found-my-…

Because we have a problem with violence here šŸ« šŸ™ƒ Violence is normalised. We haven't even abolished corporal punishment from our schools 🫠

And yet our elected reps want to continue to convict children for crimes that they have been encouraged/manipulated/coerced into participating in by adults...
Here is an actual fact for you. Older men have been observed telling young men/teenagers what to do during disorder.

If a child below 14 is out burning down houses in NI there is a good chance that child is a victim of child criminal exploitation who needs help interventions through the right channels and reduction in paramilitary influence in their community.
It’s worth noting that under the imminent plans proposed by Alliance, SDLP & Sinn Fein to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 14, if a child one day below 14 burnt a house down the PSNI would not even be able to investigate them, as they would have not committed a crime.

ā€œA criminal act cannot define an entire demographic. Knife violence didn’t arrive in Belfast with a refugee. It didn’t cross the border on a bus. It was here long before then, even though it was never videoed nor went viral on social media.ā€
The horrific knife attack isn't new nor "alienā€ to NI. The Shankill Butchers were Belfast born & bred. They cut throats from ear to ear. Let’s not engage in historical amnesia just because previous barbarity was never videoed nor went viral. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/comme…

From sentencing remarks of a High Court Judge in Belfast not even a week ago: ā€œa brutal and frenzied attack that involved the use of a knifeā€, so complex that pathology couldn’t determine the fatal sequence. Almost 1/2 of murders in NI recently have a domestic abuse motivation.
