New report from myself and @joyjenkins for the European Parliament surveys recent research on the news media and polarisation. We find little published evidence that the news media is increasing polarisation in Europe. reutersinstitute.politics.ox… (thread, 1/7)

Tuns out not many people change their minds due to something they see on #socialmedia. Research from @pewinternet reveals that exposure to opposing views on social media has not caused most Americans to change their own stance on issues.

Anyone else notice that when journalists have a Twitter beef match, they only use quote retweets to respond. It's an interesting example of trying to seize the initiative: Not with words, but through the layout of communication.

I admire how you do JC’s work, tirelessly and, so far, without reward. Everybody close to Mr Corbyn still despises you. It’s so unfair. Maybe adding to your MCarthyite litany by calling Mr Field a bigot will make them see sense. I do hope so.

There are concerns that #PoliticalMicrotargeting gives existing parties or those with significant resources an unreasonable advantage in elections. Some third parties simply don't have the pre-existing data or cash to buy the data needed for this type of political campaigning.

There's also evidence of #PoliticalMicrotargeting being used to direct TV advertising. Data on voters was used by the Trump 2016 campaign to target viewers of The Walking Dead in specific locations. Their data suggested a correlation between the series & anti-immigration concerns

Remember, however, that #PoliticalMicrotargeting isn't all about #SocialMedia. The data collected is also used in email campaigns to tailor the message, or in door-to-door canvassing to know what issues to talk about, or which households are swing voters.

#Facebook is one of the favourite platforms for #PoliticalMicrotargeting. On FB you can targeted based on: -Your email address -Demographic data -Location -If you have children -Interests (such as the #environment) -Pages you follow -Websites you've visited - & More.

In May 2016, @EmmanuelMacron's La Grande Marche used #PoliticalMicrotargeting to find the most statistically representative areas of #france & sent canvassers out to 100k doors. This helped them poll citizens, raise the party's profile, & gained them a valuable supporter base.

An important tool in #PoliticalMicrotargeting is the use of A/B split testing. This is where voters are sent slightly altered versions of the same message to gauge which message resonates the most. The results of this are used to fine tune messages to specific voter segments.

The biggest limit for political campaigners use of #PoliticalMicrotargeting is data protection laws. The UK & US allows for extremely personalised data. But tighter data restrictions in Germany make this harder as campaigners cannot hold data on individual households or voters.

#PoliticalMicrotargeting: During the 2016 US election @realDonaldTrump's campaign team had over 300 Terabytes of data on US voters. They also ran up to 50k versions of it's advertisements per day to test how they were received in order to refine their message.

#PoliticalMicrotargeting: The @UKLabour Party used the data to inform campaign call centres of how likely specific households are to answer the phone, & how likely specific households were to be home at different times during the day.

A report by @EmmaMayAlex (et al) raised the issue of accountability & #PoliticalMicrotargeting. Political adverts & promises can easily be deleted on social media after the election - making it very difficult to hold the candidate to account afterwards. eprints.lse.ac.uk/71945/
