Sin gave man a wrong definition of how to serve God. It is a program that shuts man’s awareness and keeps him in a state where he is ignorant about true service to God. You cannot serve the living God if your conscience has not been purged from the dead works of sin.

Sin goes beyond the obvious works of the flesh; it is an order of life—a civilization opposed to God. A person may stop committing fornication and yet continue sinning. Sin has its own form of righteousness, which is accepted as truth by many people, including some believers.
