"I’m searching for a spirituality that takes difference seriously, one that remains differentiated through encounter, one that nurtures a posture toward difference that is not inherently tribal, defensive, or insecure." - @RevSethRich

.@revsethrich has been on a journey to honestly acknowledge – no matter how painful – the reality that his spiritual frameworks as a white, #evangelical man no longer work – and never have for #BIPOC and women within the ##Church. Read more here: missioalliance.org/excessive…
Searching for “hopeful realism” … first part in a series where I’m trying to flesh out a responsive, practicable faith that integrates contemplative spirituality and political theology (but not in those top-shelf terms). Over at @missioalliancemissioalliance.org/searching…
I won’t subtweet but you’ve seen it: the clip of male pastor telling story of being propositioned by a woman at a bar while his wife was out of town … I wish I were more shocked/surprised by his story or THAT he would tell this story … 1/
Not only are these stories disconnected from reality, not only do they reinforce destructive/dangerous/dehumanizing assumptions about women’s bodies, they underwrite and perpetuate hierarchical male-centric structures … 5/
I talk frequently about how discourses (i.e. the words/stories deployed about ourselves/others and how we tell them) are a key ingredient in the mix that sustains structures of domination, beyond and beneath any individual’s intentions … this is a GREAT example 6/6
The Asbury revival dialogue reveals something deeper about how evang-ism functions:
There isn't space for affirming multiple things at once. The horizon of analysis collapses in on itself, which limits the ability to *see* the spectrum of what the Spirit is disrupting/renewing /1
Another example: almost parallel to the revival is an earthquake in Turkey/Syria that has killed 41,000 people. We can ask, "what theological logic allows for divine intervention for spiritual consolation but not for children crushed by buildings?" w/out critical judgment /6
In summary: we need space for analysis on multiple levels, simultaneously, but especially on the level of social-religious histories/systems/dynamics (this is the one that gets eclipsed, normally) ... in order to unwind both Asbury revival and other places of tension we face /7
Check out our first post of the year as Dr. Madison N. Pierce shares some of her academic journey and how she has persevered in hope through ongoing challenges: logiatheology.org/category/c…
You may have heard of “The Body Keeps the Score” by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk. It’s constantly recommended as the seminal work on trauma. No doubt it’s a valuable and important book.
But a few things to know:
First, I'm long time fan of Zahnd. And I know what he means re: the destructive mix of institutional church and coercive and/or partisan power. BUT it is critical we be nuanced in what we mean by "political power" esp for the sake of those historically w/out political agency /1
Coming up on MLK day ... I'm reminded it's easy for people like me to miss this nuance because I benefit from political agency without having to think about it. But when I miss this nuance about power, I don't do much to help nurture liberation for those who cry out for it /5
Worse, I end up standing against those organizing politically, concretely for liberation, just for the purity of my theological abstraction.
It really IS a good, Gospel thing to advocate for just, loving, reciprocal, cross-shaped political power in our church communities. 6/6
