People want to argue that the sin of Sodom was not sodomy.
In other words, they want to say homosexuality had nothing to do with it.
What they usually refer to is a passage in Ezekiel, which speaks of some of the sins of Sodom as pride, inhospitality, greed, and neglect of the poor. And they will say, “See, that is what Sodom was destroyed for.”
But what they neglect to do is look at the book of Jude, which also describes their sin as sexual immorality and going after strange flesh.
Here is the actual truth.
Homosexuality is never a sin that comes alone.
A society that promotes and protects and celebrates homosexuality is a society that has already committed idolatry on a large scale. It is also a society that has become deeply inhospitable.
In fact, there is probably nothing more inhospitable than what the men of Sodom wanted to do, which was to sodomize the strangers, the men who had come into their city.
Inhospitality and homosexuality go hand in hand, just like idolatry and homosexuality go hand in hand.
In fact, that is another argument people try to use. They say, “Well, every time Scripture mentions homosexuality, whether two men or two women, it is connected to idolatry. So the Bible is really condemning pagan religion, not the sexual activity itself.”
And the answer is, no.
The things go hand in hand.
Those who practice homosexuality ultimately have another god. Even if they want to call themselves Christian, they have redefined what God has said, and so they have a false god.
The Bible says in Romans, for example, that they did not honor God or give thanks to Him. So God gave them over to a debased mind. They began worshiping the creature rather than the Creator. They worshiped images made like man and animals and creeping things. And then God gave them over, and they did what they ought not do.
They exchanged the natural relation of man and woman for man with man and woman with woman.
That is the slide into LGBT pride.
It comes from ingratitude toward God. It comes from a lack of trust in God. It comes from refusing to worship God as God.
And we actually see that in the history of the West and in our current infatuation with celebrating pride and homosexuality.
We did not start there.
We started with the Enlightenment and higher criticism subtly denying the truth of the Bible. We started with pride, greed, and avarice. We started with winking at adultery and other sins. And of course, that has begotten a culture that has forgotten God.
And in forgetting God, we exchange worshiping Him according to His design for worshiping nature and ourselves. That leads us into all kinds of confusion and wickedness. We no longer even know what God designed us for.
So yes, idolatry, greed, inhospitality, and homosexuality are all wrapped up together.
Someone will say, “Yes, but the Bible is condemning that. It is not condemning a loving, monogamous homosexual relationship.”
For one, the Bible knows nothing of the sort, because really, there is no such thing.
If you look at the statistics, homosexual men, as a category, have far more sexual partners and encounters than any other group. So this modern idea of a faithful, ordinary, lifelong homosexual marriage is largely a fiction. It is a unicorn people have invented in order to say, “See, the Bible doesn’t condemn this.”
But it does not exist in the way they pretend it exists.
And even if someone could create such an arrangement, it still would not be love.
You cannot call it loving when it is disobedience to God.
You cannot call it loving when it goes against how God designed man and woman from the very beginning.
You cannot call it loving when even the act itself is destructive and dangerous, because it uses the body in a way God never designed it to be used.
So no, the modern category of a “loving homosexual relationship” is not some loophole in the Bible.
It does not exist for several reasons.
First, that is not how homosexuality is actually practiced in real life.
Second, it is not loving to disobey God and go against how He designed man and woman from the beginning.
Even if we had no other Bible verse than Genesis 1, we would still know that homosexuality is wrong.
God made man male and female. He commanded them to be fruitful and mulitply.
That settles the matter.
