It’s the CDG Awards night again. The biggest pat your own back/marking your own homework/shouting into the echo chamber event of the year. Actors I know think it’s laughable.

Imagine if an actor tweeted stuff like this.

Just to #nitpick, paid 1-1 meetings with actors are against @CDGNews guidelines. You charged £28 to each actor for a 10 mins online slot after reviewing a short self tape. You’re also a @BAFTA and @CDAssoc member. Do they endorse this?
Lovely to meet everyone this morning on Zoom. Reviewed some great self tapes. Wonderful to chat and so good to be able to delve deep into the very, very fine points what worked and what could be improved for future self tapes. #NitPicking! #AlwaysLearning @rolling_academy

We were blocked by @rolling_academy for calling this out. So we asked the directors of Tib Street Studio who appear to behind this. @EvelynRobots @jameseoates @HannahEllisRyan @AmyDuQuesne. Silence from them too.

These sorts of workshops and casting directors were widely discredited in the U.S. There were prosecutions under labour laws. But fundamentally they take advantage of cash-strapped actors with little educational or employment benefit.

Next up @AndyBCasting is doing morning and afternoon casting workshops @TakeoneUk on 14th Oct. £38 per person, and at 20 participants per session that’d turn over a cool £1,500 of actors’ cash in a day. 1/2

Next up is @ADuarteCasting who is doing paid (£20) 1-1 online meetings with actors with @justaddmilkJAM. Presumably Ana doesn’t want to join @CDGNews in the future as breaking two rules:

1. Doing paid 1-1 meetings with actors. 2. Holding workshops when it appears they don’t have 2 years of professional casting director experience (see IMDB). Feel free to correct us (Ana will need to unblock first as not keen to engage)

The situation in the USA is being played out here in the UK at casting workshops such as @justaddmilkJAM @CastingWorkshop @mixingnetworks @RUNATITSHOUTING @ActorsGuildGB @thecwc2023 hollywoodreporter.com/news/g…

The @CDGNews is so far silent, even when casting assistants like @nehabanik break the Guild’s guidelines and offers 1-1 paid meetings with actors.
228
We’ve noticed @nehabanik is breaking @CDGNews rules and conducting paid 1-1 meetings with actors @justaddmilkJAM. £10 a go for a few minutes on Zoom.

The agents are at it too. @SamWLDay from @InterActors will take £30 on 9th November @justaddmilkJAM. He’ll even do a spot of directing- “You will then perform your sides, one by one, and receive feedback and redirection.”

And @h_davidson15 an agent from @TheBWHAgency will also take £30 and do a spot of directing @justaddmilkJAM.

If you’re free this Saturday you can do 20 lines of Shakespeare (twice) for Matilda James for £42 at @RUNATITSHOUTING. £1 a line!

ET casting director Marci Liroff: “Liroff’s remarks … were tersely dismissive about the educational value of the workshops often bandied about by the owners and participating casting directors, along with their associates and assistants.”hollywoodreporter.com/news/g…! @ActorsGuildGB

“A Q&A and ‘this is how my office works’ is not a lesson plan. It needs to be prepared in advance and given to the workshops.” “Associates and assistants without proper experience are allowed to “teach” classes. (Are they really a casting director or do they answer phones?)”
