Medieval Wakefield Day

A visit to the medieval chantry chapel at Wakefield, followed by a guided tour of Sandal Castle and the 1460 battle of Wakefield.

29th March 1461: Battle of Towton.
The royal dynasty changes from Lancaster to York, as Edward IV eventually emerges victorious from a long and bloody fight for the crown.

Finally visited St. Mary’s Lead today. It was bathed in a gorgeous, early evening light. Hard to imagine that one of the bloodiest battles ever fought on England’s soil, The Battle of Towton was fought a mile or so from this place in 1461

Despite Yorkist defensive preparations for battle north of St Albans, Margaret of Anjou's Lancastrians surprise Warwick's men by entering and capturing the town from the west and attacking them from the rear. The Yorkists flee.
