Joining a codebase built by non-programmers is often easier to fix than one “guided by smart coders.”
Non-programmer code is messy but literal and readable.
“Smart” code too often means clever abstractions, hidden invariants, and indirection you have to reverse-engineer.

Concerning what Elon did was or was not the salute, it doesn't matter what he attempted to do. As a person now working in politics, he should be always aware how his actions COULD be interpreted as. So the fact that it COULD be interpreted as THE salute implies he is okay with it
