I spent so much time making a great side bar iPad experience and being able to bring it to landscape iPhone and iPhone Fold is going to be a huge productivity unlock for my users on the go.
Starting with iOS 27, we can actually convert a tab bar to a sidebar. A new modifier was introduced to do this. โ€œ.defaultTabBarPlacement(.sidebar)โ€ As of current testing, this seems to work on iPhones as well when the app is in landscape mode. This is the same behavior used in the iPhone Health app, where the tab bar converts into a sidebar in landscape mode!

The craft is undeniable... But $2m in investment, how does this become profitable? There are a few things that will likely drown this app... ๐Ÿงต

Introducing Pool That little icon got us $2M in funding, 15M organic views, and now you can all finally discover what's behind it. Pool is "just an app for your screenshots." But it holds a few bets we decided to build a whole company on. We believe the context of the future is your camera roll. Understanding someone's taste, the texture of their life, can unlock things we can't even comprehend yet. We believe the future of interfaces will feel the way games make us feel, computing as a beautiful mix of art and technology. Now live on the App Store.

This app is using Gemini off device to analyse your photos, that's a big overheard cost and people simply will not pay for a screenshot app.

Soooo, if it's a free app, and people won't pay in the future, you have to ask what their gameplay is here, what story did they tell to get $2m investment? Even if the app only analyses your screenshot data it will know a lot about you.

It upsets me that I need to support another form factor and the optimizations I made for iPad seem to not apply to the fold.
Apple is flat out telling developers to start designing their iPhone apps for widescreen aspect ratios. This is the biggest hint that iPhone Ultra Fold is coming in September. video source: Apple Platforms State of the Union

Right now Claude is going through my Android app in the emulator and reviewing it against my iOS app in the iOS simulator, and making sure a complex booking flow matches in design and function, and it's nailing it.

It originally took me over a week to build this flow in iOS without AI. I have since replicated it on web and Android in a couple of hours. At this point Claude has saved me at least 1 year of dev time and I'm likely underestimating.

I wish this was the opposite way around. Soft by default and you have to set hard to bring them back.
For iOS 27 apps, you can easily bring back the soft edge from iOS 26 using scrollEdgeEffectStyle(.soft)

I don't think any of us believe a single part of this Siri demo after what they did to us last year, even if they are using it on a device and showing it load...

5 minutes into trying Meta Ray-Bans and I can already see the huge potential here, but I can also see how far away these are from reaching it.

All of this makes me believe in Apple Glasses even more, even if they don't have a screen. With Siri powered by whichever AI I like, paired with Apple's camera and speaker tech, I'd immediately replace the glasses I wear everyday. No question.

I'm going to return these glasses unless someone has hacked them... they can't be used for photos and videos as I'd hoped but if I could integrate with Claude I think they'd be useful.
