🇦🇺 2-0 🇹🇷 Winning and losing is part of football. Respect should be too. Disappointing to see Arda Güler walk away without acknowledging or shaking hands with the Australian players after the final whistle. Moments like that say a lot about character. Turkey have some outstanding footballers, but sportsmanship matters just as much as talent. The Socceroos earned their victory and deserved that respect. Take the loss, shake hands, and move on. That’s football. 🤝⚽️ 🎥 @iHQGuler

Roy Keane on Turkey losing 2-0 to Australia national soccer team in their World Cup opener: 🗣️ “I don't want to hear excuses. Before the match, everyone was talking about Turkey as if the three points were already in the bag. Well, football doesn't care about predictions. Australia looked like a team playing for their lives. Turkey looked like a team waiting for something to happen. That's the difference. One side competed, the other side expected. What annoys me most is the attitude. You can forgive mistakes. You can forgive missed chances. But you cannot forgive a lack of urgency at a World Cup. Australia won the physical battle, the mental battle, and in key moments they won the football battle too. That's embarrassing if you're Turkey because they were supposed to be the team making the statement tonight. Some players will look at the tactics, some will blame luck, and some will point fingers elsewhere. Nonsense. Start by looking in the mirror. World Cups are not won by talent alone. The harsh reality is this: Australia arrived believing they could win. Turkey arrived believing they should win. One mindset creates history. The other creates headlines like this.”

While Australian sports fans remember John Aloisi’s penalty and Mark Schwarzer’s saves from the Socceroos’ epic win over Uruguay to qualify for the 2006 World Cup, few recall the sacrifices Tony Popovic made for his team in that same game. FEATURE ▶️ bit.ly/4xqopm6

Toby is right, and good on him. Australia will stop for 90 minutes on Sunday. And all eyes will be on the @Socceroos Very rarely have we had the opportunity to see games at a reasonable time here in Australia, aside from our own 2023 World Cup, and 2002, in our time zone, which broke all records. The Socceroos playing at 2, 5am and 12 midday is a very rare chance for every kid to experience the Roos against the world. Let them all do so. Settle in for an intense, emotional and nerve wracking experience. The only way to go through it, with the drama and tension, is together. In a way that only World Cups can deliver.
The AFL have scheduled a game DURING the Socceroos first World Cup match 🤯 Not even GWS captain Toby Greene wants to play in it 😅 🗣 "I think our game should have started at 11am on Sunday... they could have done a Socceroos watch party at Marvel after our game... I WOULD'VE ******* STAYED AND WATCHED IT!"
