Shipping guy with an interest in the eighteenth century military. Author of ‘No Want of Courage. The British Army in Flanders, 1793-1795’ (Helion, 2022).
I’m excited to have received this @Cat_S_Beck, courtesy of the recent @boydellbrewer sale. Patronage networks have received so little treatment in studies of the 18C navy
I’m honoured to be giving the November @societyarmy online talk tomorrow! I’ll be speaking about the commissariat department during the Flanders campaign of 1793-5 sahr.org.uk/view-event.php?s…

I know this is old news, but I finally got round to watching ‘Napoleon’ on a long flight. Let’s just say I won’t be rushing to see it again on a proper screen
A truly remarkable achievement given the weather conditions (plenty of rain, snow and fog) and the amount of man-hauling of siege artillery required, over marshy & rocky terrain
Louisbourg represented the only territorial gain of any significance during the War of the Austrian Succession, with the French willing to hand back Madras & the Austrian Netherlands to get it back at the peace
Strongly recommended to anyone interested in how a late-18th century army functioned. @RobinThomas1000 did an incredible job mining the archives to put this book together.

Really chuffed with my recently arrived 4 vols of Lord Sandwich’s correspondence as First Lord of the Admiralty, 1771-82. So much detail on the day-to-day management of the navy and Indispensable for understanding naval aspects of the AWI
Got home last night from a lengthy biz trip to find the latest @societyarmy Journal with a nice review of my ‘No Want of Courage’ by @RMB_History. How did a British expeditionary force operate in the field? Why not take a look: helion.co.uk/military-histor…
Been looking off & on for a copy of this for some time. An excellent analysis of the role of naval power in British strategic thinking, 1650-1850. Also important chapters on patronage & tactical deployments
Took delivery of a very nice copy of Tony Hayter’s ‘The Army and the Crowd’. Forget battles & famous commanders, policing duties (& garrisoning His Majesty’s colonial possessions) is what the 18C army actually spent most of their time doing.
Furiously typing up the paper I gave (The Royal Navy in North America, 1767-1771) at the @Helionbooks naval conference back in Oct. Can I/can’t I complete it by Sunday evening. This is the question
OK so the first draft is done. 10.5k words. Mighty relieved. One less thing to do 😅. Would still like to check a couple of things in the PRO, but there it is
