Do we actually have any wingers better than Kvaratskhelia and Doue at the moment? Football has clearly moved beyond the traditional idea of wingers staying high and fullbacks staying deep.
Now, everyone moves with the flow of the game. If your winger attacks, your fullback has to support. If your fullback defends, your winger must track back. That’s the modern way to control matches.
You even see midfielders and fullbacks inverting and scoring goal not because those teams lack strikers, but because it helps create numerical superiority over the opposition.
When your winger and fullback both defend, you create a 2v1 advantage against the opponent’s winger. When both push forward, you also create a 2v1 overload against their fullback.
And when a midfielder or fullback inverts into the box, it adds an extra body in attack, giving you an edge over the defensive line.
We’re not in 2012 anymore.
