I'm a bit worried that CBMT will come out with the new music therapy practice analysis later this summer, say that the amount of knowledge to be a music therapist has risen, and then raise the minimum passing score, leading to an even lower first-time pass rate...

The 2022 AMTA Workforce Analysis just came out. Better late than never, although a majority of the data were collected in the first part of 2023. Here are some trends that stuck out to me after my first read-through:

ยท The proportion of MTs with white/caucasian heritage is was the lowest it's ever been in 2022. Only 81% of respondents had some kind of white heritage. Historically, around 88% of MTs had white heritage before 2022.

It looks like the survey got out to a good mix of non-AMTA members. About 45% of respondents were not AMTA members. This makes me feel like the survey results are more reliable. Also, membership hit its lowest ever numbers: 1,783. Roughly 17% of MTs in the U.S. are AMTA members.

This shirt feels like an ethics violation waiting to happen. They've sold 976 shirts so far.

The first-time pass rate for the CBMT exam is now at 65% as of April 2025. The notoriously difficult California bar exam first-time pass rate was 68% as of July 2024. The MT-BC exam is not as hard as the CA bar exam. What is going on here??

Love that music therapy forums are still full of posts of: "Hey, can you share resources about this topic? I did a search myself, but I decline to share any resources I may have come across already so my saying I did a search feels more like a formality so people will respond."

FYI, the field now has a graphic novel version of a music therapy textbook

It's a funny feeling to start going to music therapy conferences as a student and then one day be on a conference planning committee and realize that you're one of the "grown ups" running the show now...

Research articles promise you the world and then give you nothing. "To allow for replication of the study we will provide the reader with a detailed description of the music therapy intervention..." And this is all they give you:

At this point, I think the most efficient way to do advocacy is to get a music therapy TV procedural dramedy on the air.

Advocacy perspective is getting this tiktok on your algorithm feed and not feeling the urge to direct message anyone.

I'm seeing that there's an open ethics board position and I'm toying with applying, but my partner is discouraging me because they know that I'll just be let down and I likely won't be able to implement meaningful reforms ๐Ÿ˜ถ

New music therapy hack: if you need a mobile set up going between hospital rooms, class rooms, etc., a janitor's cart is actually a really good fit for lugging your stuff around
