Here’s the student’s final draft. To make revision more intentional and effective, students were required to highlight where they made changes. Their revisions focused on adding appositives and expanding “kernel” sentences where needed. I’m fully sold on strategies from @TheWritingRevol and the Hochman Method. It’s clear as day now: when we write to learn, we also learn to write. I can and should teach students to write effectively while building their knowledge of the world. These aren’t competing goals—they’re complementary. Each strengthens the other. More to come.
We’re getting ready to revise our single paragraphs on the refugee journey using @TheWritingRevol Hochman Method. First, I didn’t realize what I didn’t know about the distinction between revising and editing 🤯—a total paradigm shift for me. Next, I’m prepping students for revision by marking their rough drafts where they’ll add appositives and expand “kernel-ish” sentences with essential detail. This is where the sentence-level instruction I’ve been doing is really going to pay off.

A quick example of FASE reading led by a student. Listen to how quickly he takes over reading from another student. Choral reading at end. I give a quick countdown and class reads together.

What would this look like in a SS/History classroom? 1. Work with Primary Source docs We us HAPPY: go step by step? 2. Sequencing Events? 3. Cause and Effect?

One of my favorite routines for partner reading of decodable texts: 1) Students underline sentences in alternating colors. 2) Students determine which color they will read. 3) Students read the text a few times and then swap colors. It’s easy and keeps the students engaged!🤓📖

I go back to this all the time. The use of categorization helps students scale up vocabulary knowledge. Odd One Out exercises makes students think about how words are related. You can always add a prompt to explain why.

🚨I built my explicit instruction model for next year with help from my “Three Amigos” — Sweller, Rosenshine, and Ausubel. I walk through a lesson using the model, connect every move to the “amigos”, and share a toolbox teachers can use to do the same. 👇 open.substack.com/pub/solint…

Floored by the passing of @scottmpetri. Brilliant teacher, the best of New England in California, and such a nice guy. Your reach and impact is greater than you could ever realize, Scott. You’ll be sorely missed. Please call/text 988 if you’re struggling. You matter. Truly.

If you are rethinking how to have students engage in document analysis other than on screens or using worksheets, here are a few ideas. This is the same activity but presented in three different ways: 1. Hallway Gallery Walks 2. Brown Bag Grab and Go 3. Mystery Ziplock Sort
