There are a range of possible ways to reduce risk of shark bites.
Electric deterrents is now well-documented to reduce likelihood of bites, but here is a novel way which could be used by surfers in the future: counter-illumination

Any SEM experts out there please can you help me with my images. (I should see daily increments).
This is a glass eel otolith embedded in epoxy resin. I polished until I could see the core with 1/0.05 micron lapping film. I then etched with EDTA and sputter-coated with gold.

In some examples increments are slightly visible but overall I can't use this.
I'm getting much better images using a compound microscope.

For reference this is the same otolith under the compound, so increments are definitely present. I just can't seem to get the knack of the SEM. 🫠
