Disclosure Day, like a lot of alien stories, feels like a way to talk about Unit 731 without talking about Unit 731, the cruelty of the human race in pursuit of science.
Jackie Gleason: When I said ‘To the moon, Alice,’ I was talking about hitting her. Not actual space travel.
Nixon *covering up alien corpse*: Well this is embarrassing…
Gleason: Kinda fucked up, Dick. That thing probably had a family.
Nixon *tearing up*: …This was a stupid
1973.
Nixon is master of the United States,
only his own pride and need to show off for Jackie Gleason stands before him,
presidents are now civilians.
In the very first scene they use water drops on a car window to make it look like the cosmos is overlaid on Firth and O’Connor, and I just did this for the rest of the movie.
There are so many casually genius shots in Disclosure Day which prove Spielberg is still THE master of Hollywood style. A reflected image orienting you during an exposition dump about Colman Domingo. Light and mise-en-scene drawing your eye to important details in busy scenes.
A film that eschews the term "alien" so that we can see the humanity in the "non-humans" who have populated the collective imagination for nearly 80 years, and hopefully, the humanity in ourselves.
