I’m genuinely happy for Scotland. It’s been 35 years since they last won a game at the World Cup, so congratulations to them.
However…
It should be pointed out that they were playing a side that are ranked 83rd in the world, the third lowest ranked team in the competition. Despite that, Scotland scraped a 1–0 win and spent large parts of the game under pressure.
The new 48 team format inevitably means there will be some lower quality matches at the tournament, and this was one of the poorest I’ve seen at a World Cup.
It’s a shame because Scotland should be able to celebrate a World Cup win without any caveats attached to it. But if we’re being completely honest, they only qualified because of the expanded format, which does lessen the significance of the achievement somewhat.
Having said all that, congratulations to Scotland. 35 years is a long time to wait. As an England fan, it’s not something we’re ever likely to experience, but it must have been a difficult period for Scottish fans. So well done and good luck against Morocco 👍
