Another year over and the CCF is off for the summer. A holiday is all well and good but we miss the fun of Wednesday afternoons! All change too, as Maj McLean moves on to a new school and Lt Ben Welch, OC of the RM Section, takes over as Contingent Commander.

Only two weeks of CCF left this year! It's always a bit of a shame when the summer holiday starts and we don't parade for two months, though we shouldn't complain about the holiday!

It was also a great pleasure to welcome our guests from @irish_guards, @4PARAREG, @RoyalMarines, @FusiliersRHQ, @HACRegiment and @RoyalAirForce today. We couldn't achieve a fraction of our training without their invaluable support. Cadets thrive with encouragement!

What a fantastic inspection today! The contingent very much did themselves proud and Cdre Cochrane was hugely complementary. Photographs to follow...

An anniversary missed by one day! Yesterday was the anniversary in 1942 of when our former cadet Lt Cdr Sam Beattie commanded HMS Campbeltown in the raid of St Nazaire, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. We were delighted to welcome his son back to Rugby last year.

Another fascinating piece of our history as one of the original (1860) cadet units of the British Isles - a Rugby School Rifle Volunteer's cap dated 1861. The condition is amazing! @CCFcadets

Two beautiful 1861 P53 Enfield rifles that have been in our possession since used by our shooting team until the issue of Martini Henry rifles in the 1870s.

...and here's A.P. Humphrey (seated) who used the smaller rifle to win the Ashburton Shield in 1868. This photo was taken six months later.

Brilliant to welcome Capt Dutney, Reg Adj of @FirstFusiliers, our longest-standing sponsor unit, of which we originally formed a part within the Second Volunteer Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Always good to renew old friendships...

In deepest Northamptonshire, Rugby CCF is ready for a great day’s training tomorrow. The senior cadets are already out there - remember the old line about raining and training?
