Our latest work on intron-generating transposons, introners, just posted to biorxiv. We identify the types of TEs that contribute to intron gain, and we show direct evidence that introners horizontally transfer between distantly related eukaryotes. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/

This HGT'd introner is a normal TE in a sponge (many copies not associated with introns), and generated a ton of introns in a dinoflagellate.

This is illuminating for genome evolution: (1) Most kinds of TE can create new introns. This implies that intron gain is to an extent inevitable, and (2) Direct evidence for HGT supports an important role in shaping the distributions of introners across life.
