I work at a college and while this isn’t common, I’ve had some students who genuinely can’t read above a 5th grade level or write out a simple sentence without help from a professor. Many public schools continue to push students through without needed, intentional intervention.

And it’s not always due to neglect of the school. Many public schools are severely understaffed and underfunded so there aren’t enough people to have the type of meaningful intervention that they need to have. Just another reason why the education system in this country sucks
