Aussie indie author, writing a series about a fairy detective in a steampunk kingdom. Character art by @pamonhaart. Logo by Lee Bradford. LGBT ally. (He/him.)
Hi all. Given everything that's been going on with Twitter/X, I've decided it's time for me to depart from this platform (pun intended).
I've listed my other socials on my website: rychilla.com/contact/. Please feel free to follow me on these.
A comm for @Rychilla; an illustration of a scene from their novel! Fairy detectives Yaetherim and Naeliya meet in a tavern to discuss a case.
Was a fun opportunity to tackle some fantasy-style characters 🙂
Unsolicited DM: I've seen your profile and noticed you're a writer. What genre do you write?
Me: If you've seen my profile, you'd know 🤭😏
Some people...🤣🤣
2 years ago, i called my mom in tears after receiving a particularly harsh rejection. i didn't think i'd ever get published.
today, i got to tell her that the chinese historical book i wrote—inspired by her favorite legend—is a GMA book club pick & it'll be published tomorrow 🥹
I'm worried my 2nd book starts a bit slower than the first. Then I have to remind myself that there are two starts to whodunits - either the detective is in the right place to become involved, or a client comes to them. APOD is the former, and book 2 is the latter. #amwriting
"Money doesn't buy happiness."
Yes, I know. I am quite capable of making all the happiness I need all on my own. What money buys is food, shelter and utilities so that I can continue to exist and create the happiness.
How come there are no black elves? Black people are some of the most hardcore fans of fantasy, sci-fi, anime, comics, etc. Yet they are seriously underrepresented in those genres. Dragons are cool, but couldn't they invent main characters that are a bit more melanated?
Hey Writers! You won't be writers if you sell-out to AI. Some very prominent people in the publishing world say this is the way to go. Well, they wouldn't have to pay royalties to a computer.
Let's protect our rights as writers, and the creative arts, or it will all be gone.
I'm really not a fan of the whole "cut every word that isn't absolutely necessary" school of thought. Like, you're cutting out your style. Without that flourish, it's gonna read as clinical and dry, and no one wants that! #WritingCommunity
Too many times have I read comments about self-published authors are a dead giveaway because of mistakes and grammar.
However, my rule of thumb is that if I find a handful of mistakes its no big deal.
There are traditionally published books with mistakes too
Editing your first draft? Ask yourself these questions.
✨Are there crutch words you overuse?
✨Is there a character who doesn't need to be there?
✨Does the timeline and plot work?
✨Is there enough tension?

"Write for your market"
No
10000000 authors are writing for the market.
Write for the little unique gremlin in your brain who keeps banging pots and pans together and demanding to be fed your weirdest fantasies.
