Today the AMA House of Delegates passed Resolution 710: Parity in Access to Evidence-Based Obesity Treatment. Obesity is a chronic disease. Coverage policy should treat it like one. No arbitrary carve-outs. No unsupported mandatory supervised weight loss requirements. No fail-first barriers that would be unacceptable for diabetes, cancer, hypertension, or coronary disease. Coverage parity means access to the full spectrum of evidence-based care: behavioral therapy, nutrition therapy, anti-obesity medications, endoscopic therapies, and metabolic and bariatric surgery. This is my last act as the @ASMBS lead delegate before I pass the torch to my co-delegate @mattars77. It has been an honor to serve this organization on behalf of our membership and our patients.
